Travis Kelce’s mom, Donna, explains why she said meeting Taylor Swift was just ‘OK’

NFL Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and the musical superstar that is Taylor Swift sparked romance rumors this fall. “I threw the ball in her court. I told her, I’ve seen you rock a stage in Arrowhead and you might have to come see me rock the stage at Arrowhead,” Travis said on The Pat McAfee Show when asked about the dating rumors on September 21. “We’ll see what happens in the near future.” Then just three days later, Taylor was seen seated next to Travis’ mom, Donna Kelce at a Kansas City Chiefs' game.

Taylor and Donna seemed to be hitting it off and having a great time together, but in an interview on The Today Show, which aired on October 6, Donna seemed less than excited about Taylor. Well, according to a new interview in WSJ Magazine, Donna regrets what she said in the Today interview and is now ready to gush about how Taylor is making her son feel. Aver, aver, let's get into the details!

What went down during the interview on October 6.

Donna was interviewed by Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie. Presumably, the interview was supposed to be about how Donna, as the mother of two very successful football players, has been thrust into the spotlight as well. But, of course, they asked about Travis and Taylor.

Hoda started the Taylor and Travis discussion.

Hoda asked if the first time Donna met Taylor was when they were spotted together in a box at her son’s game. “Yeah, you know, it’s fairly new, so I don’t like to talk about it,” Donna replied. “It’s just one of those things where, you know, obviously everybody saw me. I was in the boxes with her and it’s just another thing that’s amped up my life.”

Then Savannah wanted to know what Taylor was like.

Savannah asked what it was like to sit with Taylor for “a couple of games” and get to know her. “It was OK,” Donna responded with a shrug of her shoulder. At the time, everyone thought that was Donna’s way of expressing that she wasn’t all that into Taylor.

Donna was also asked if she thought her son and Taylor were in a 'budding romance.'

“You know all the Swifties will kill us if we don’t ask … Do you think it’s a budding romance?” Savannah asked. Donna responded: “I honestly can’t tell you. It’s just too new.” And even if she did think it was a budding romance at the time, it’s not like it was her place to say.

Although she came off as less than enthusiastic about Taylor, Travis was fine with it.

When the interview aired, Travis didn’t have a problem with how his mother responded to the Taylor questions. But Donna still regrets her responses because they weren’t meant to come off like she wasn’t "enthusiastic" about Taylor

Travis understood where his mom was coming from and approved.

"Trying not to sound too enthusiastic, she came off underwhelmed," WSJ Magazine states. "Kelce, not wanting his mom to feel bad, immediately phoned her and assured her that she did a super job — adding that her green eyeglasses looked great."

Donna just didn’t feel comfortable talking about her son’s relationship back then.

But she does now. “I can tell you this,” she told WSJ Magazine. “He’s happier than I’ve seen him in a long time…. God bless him, he shot for the stars!” Aww, how sweet is that?

Nowadays, Donna is more candid about the relationship.

"I think the attention is just part of the whole thing,” Donna told Good Morning America. "She’s a megastar and I think Travis is embracing it as much as he can, so I think it’s OK. He likes attention, so he’ll be fine. As long as he can handle it, I don’t have any problems with it. She’s a very, very nice person."

And what does Travis have to say about his relationship with Taylor?

Well, he calls her a "genius" and says she's "hilarious." He also says: "I've never been a man of words. Being around her, seeing how smart Taylor is, has been [expletive] mind-blowing. I'm learning every day." Aww, he likes her, he really likes her!
