Sofía Vergara is known for her impeccable style, stunning beauty, and exceptional acting skills—in addition to her spunky personality, of course. The Colombian and American actress isn’t afraid to ruffle feathers if needed. And recently, Sofía clapped back at a male interviewer in Spain for criticizing her English while promoting her upcoming Netflix mini-series, Griselda.

Sofía, 51, was born in Barranquilla, Columbia. She got her start in the 1990s on Univision network and later, after she emigrated to the US, the game show A Que No Te Atreves. For 11 seasons, the actress portrayed Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the ABC mockumentary-style sitcom Modern Family. Today, Sofía is known for serving as a judge on the NBC competition series America’s Got Talent—and has most recently embarked on a media tour for Griselda.
Let's take a closer look at what went down during a recent interview in Spain.
Sofía has been promoting her new Netflix series.
To start off the new year, Sofía began a press tour for Griselda, which drops on January 25. “London here we gooooo !!#griseldapresstour. ❤️,” she captioned an Instagram photo of her posing by a private jet. Since then, the actress has shared regular updates about her travels and amazing outfits.
During an interview in Spain, an interviewer made a snarky comment about Sofía’s English.
Earlier this week, Sofía made an appearance on a Spanish talk show El Hormiguero. Interviewer Pablo Motos asked the actress, "How do you say Modern Family?" The AGT judge was not happy about the snide remark, which seemingly made fun of her accent. And she didn’t let the subtle shade go unchallenged.
Sofía was clearly unhappy about what Pablo said.
In response to Pablo’s remark, Sofía clapped back, "I say it wrong? Oh, because you speak better English than me? Ah,” per the Daily Mail. She then looked away with an unamused look on her face. But that was only the beginning of Sofía’s response.
Sofía proceeded to roast Pablo about his lack of accolades compared to her.
After Pablo continued with the interview, Sofía asked, “How many Emmy nominations do you have in the United States?” (The actress has snagged four Emmy nominations and four Golden Globe nominations so far.) She added, "How many times did they nominate you at the Golden Globes?"
Fans are praising Sofía on social media for her response.
On X, formerly Twitter, fans are lauding Sofía for clapping back at Pablo. One person tweeted, “My favorite part of Sofía Vergara in El hormiguero is when she calls Pablo Motos jealous because he doesn't understand how everyone likes her but when she tells him to stop lying, clowning around and bothering the guests, it's wonderful.”
Meanwhile, another X user wrote, “VIVA SOFIA VERGARA, que una vez más demostro que es una reinota, y que las mujeres no tenemos por que soportar los chistes estúpidos de hombres como este que se creen graciosos.” It translates as: “Long live SOFIA VERGARA, who once again showed that she is a great lady, and that women do not have to put up with stupid jokes from men like this who think they are funny.”
Another talk show host publicly poked fun at Sofía’s English.
This isn’t the first time a host has publicly commented on Sofía’s English. During a 2017 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ellen quizzed the actress on the pronunciation of words like “flabbergasted” and “discombobulated.” (She nailed the former, she struggled with the latter.) Although Sofía didn’t call out Ellen at the time, perhaps she should have.
