Sofía Vergara opens up about public divorce from Joe Manganiello

When Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello announced their divorce in July 2023, fans were shocked at the split. The Modern Family actress and Magic Mike actor had been married since 2015, and at least outwardly, all seemed well with their relationship. Now, six months later, Sofía has opened up about going through her very public breakup.

The America’s Got Talent Judge, 51, and Joe, 47, first met back in 2014 at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner. Thanks to her Modern Family costar, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, introducing them. By December, Joe proposed, and the couple said “I do” in November 2015. Let’s take a closer look at their divorce and Sofía’s recent statements about ending their relationships so publicly.

Sofía expected the media attention following news of her divorce.

On Sunday, January 14, Sofía opened up about the media circus surrounding her divorce from Joe. “You’re out there, and people know that's part of being a celebrity,” she said during an appearance on CBS Sunday Morning. “I knew it was gonna happen. You can’t hide those things.”

Media coverage of her divorce was actually more respectful than she anticipated.

During her CBS Sunday Morning interview, Sofía acknowledged the media coverage could have been way worse. “I have to say the press was very respectful and very nice. And I thought that they were gonna invent more things, and you know how it usually is,” she said. “I was surprised and, you know, they, they kind of just said what it was and, and that was it.”

Sofía and Joe announced their divorce in a joint statement in July 2023.

On July 17, Sofía and Joe released a joint statement published by Page Six. "We have made the difficult decision to divorce," they shared. “As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives.”

Joe filed for divorce two days later.

On the heels of the breakup announcement, Joe officially filed for divorce two days later. He cited “irreconcilable difference” as the reason for the end of their marriage, according to documents obtained by Today. The date of separation was listed as July 2.

Sofía has since been romantically linked to Justin Saliman.
