‘Selena y Los Dinos’ documentary is going to get you muy excited

Selena Quintanilla-Pérez fans rejoice! Netflix has acquired the rights to Selena y Los Dinos, a documentary about the late, great Queen of Tejano Music that focuses on her early years performing alongside her family band Los Dinos. And, no, it’s not like any other Selena documentary, show, or biopic you’ve ever seen about the legendary Mexican American star.

Even if you think you know everything there is to know about Selena, who has unbelievably been gone for 30 years now, I promise you this documentary is something to get muy excited about because it features never-before-seen home videos of the singer. Wanna know more? I got ya!

What’s the vibe of the film?

The vibe is personal and intimate as the film spotlights Selena’s family dynamics and her extraordinary career trajectory before she was murdered at the age of 23 by Yolanda Saldivar, the president of her fan club.

It was directed by Isabel Castro and executive produced by Michele Anthony, and Suzette Quintanilla and AB Quintanilla III, who in addition to being Selena’s siblings, played drums and bass guitar in Los Dinos.

Where did the never-before-seen footage come from?

The home video shared in the film is part of the family’s personal archive and was shot by Suzette. Basically, it’s like getting to see Selena from the perspective of her older sister. Personal in a way that can only be captured by those closest to you.

The director explained the film ‘reveals new dimensions.’

“As a filmmaker, I wanted to honor her extraordinary rise and enduring legacy, while also giving a window into her life behind the stage,” Isabel Castro told Dateline. “Through personal archive and intimate interviews with her family, the film reveals new dimensions of her journey that have never been seen before.”

It’s already won awards.

The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2025, where it won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Archival Storytelling. Then, in March, it went on to win the audience award at South by Southwest.

When and where can you watch it?

According to Deadline, “The film will be released globally on Netflix later this winter.” A poco no estás excited to see this new documentary? I know I am. Selena remains an icon. It’s a testament to her talent, appeal, and relevance that 30 years after her death, her legacy continues to inspire.
