Selena Gomez partners with Univision on upcoming Spanish-language true-crime docuseries

It's just been announced that singer and actress Selena Gomez, 29, has signed on to produce an upcoming Spanish-language docuseries with Univision. Titled Mi Vecino, El Cartel, the true-crime show will be the very first series that Selena has produced in Spanish and potentially the start of an ongoing relationship with the network.

"Selena Gomez is obviously a superstar—there's probably nobody bigger—and she also cares a lot about elevating Latinx voices and storytelling. So the match was perfect," said Rodrigo Mazón, the executive vice president and general manager of Univision's SVOD (its premium subscription streaming service) in a press release issued in conjunction with the announcement.

The case the series covers happened in Selena's home state.

The series will cover the case of Juan Guerrero Chapa, a former cartel lawyer and an informant for the US government, who was murdered in a small Texas suburb in 2013. According to a press release from Univision, the case "rocked a quiet suburban town in Texas and launched a multiyear international investigation."

Selena is a true-crime fan.

"As a true crime fan, I was immediately captivated when I heard the story surrounding the homicide of Juan Guerrero Chapa. Not only did it take place close to my hometown in Texas, but it was also a story unlike anything I've ever heard," Selena said, according to the press release.

She intends for the series to be enlightening.

"I am excited to partner with Univision and really pull back the layers of his double life," Selena said of her vision for the three-part docuseries, which will cover Juan's murder as well as the subsequent investigation and trial.

She's the right person for the job.

"Selena Gomez has used her influence and reach to shed light on issues relevant to U.S. Hispanics, and as executive producer of the series, helps shape this unique story highlighting its moral complexity and the importance of culture and family on both sides of the border," asserts Univision.

The show will be available on Univision's new streaming service.

The series will be available on Univision's forthcoming Spanish-language global streaming service, which is set to launch sometime in 2022. "As we build the largest Spanish-language streaming platform in the world and an indispensable service to this audience, one of our top priorities is bringing diverse voices and stories and investing in Latina storytellers," explained Rodrigo.

And they hope this is just the beginning.

"We are proud to welcome Selena Gomez to our roster of globally-acclaimed creators that will help create the best in-language, in-culture original content," said Rodrigo, indicating Univision's hope to continue working with Selena.
