Selena Gomez has been in the spotlight since she started acting at the age of 10. Through the years, she has experienced weight fluctuations like anyone, which were compounded by medical conditions. And recently, Selena Gomez, who is now 32, addressed how comments about her weight affect her.
In 2015, the Only Murders in the Building actress publicly revealed her lupus diagnosis. Medication Selena takes to treat the autoimmune disease can cause her to gain weight. Unfortunately, the internet has not been kind to her when it does.
She and Benny Blanco made a joint podcast appearance in March.
On March 24, Selena and her fiancé, music producer Benny Blanco, were featured in the On Purpose with Jay Shetty Podcast. The Wizards of Waverly Place alum touched on body image during their chat.
“This isn’t news to anybody that obviously women have a lot more intense feelings from their appearance,” she shared.
Selena also said she tries to avoid reading comments on social media but sometimes it’s inevitable.
“There’s just so many different things that come up in my face, that I can’t help but see,” she admitted. “But I fall victim to looking at things.”
To help combat seeing negativity on social media, Selena deleted the apps from her phone.

During the sit-down with Jay, Selena further confessed, “I’m human and sometimes I read things.”
”But I do, most of the time, ignore everything,” she explained. “I don’t have anything on my phone at that moment. So, there are ways to combat it.”
However, she clarified, “I’m not in, like, ‘I hate it.’ I understand the power of what social media is. It’s just tricky.”
Selena Gomez admitted comments about her weight make her ‘bitter.’

Selena also touched on comments about her weight during the interview.
“My weight’s a big one, too,” she continued. “Everyone just has something to say, and it’s really making me sad and—not even sad ‘cause, I’m not a victim, everyone—I just think it’s made me a tad bitter. And I feel really guilty for saying that but it’s true.”
Additionally, she attributed fluctuations to her medication.

Because she has lupus, Selena takes medication that can cause weight gain.
“I would rather be healthy and take care of myself. My medications are important, and I believe that they’re what helps me,” she said on the podcast. “Not a model, never will be. And I think they’re awesome, mind you. I’m just definitely not that.”
Selena previously clapped back at online critics, revealing she has SIBO.

In late September 2024, Selena attended a premiere for her film Emilia Pérez, after which body-shamers criticized her appearance on social media. That’s when she revealed a health condition she had not previously shared.
“This makes me sick,” she wrote in a since-deleted TikTok comment, per Elle. “I have [SIBO] in my small intestine. It flares up. I don’t care that I don’t look like a stick figure. I don’t have that body. End of story. No I am NOT a victim. I’m just human.”
