Selena Gomez says ‘leave me alone’ in response to cosmetic surgery speculation

Selena Gomez has been in the public eye since she was a child. The attention comes with blessings, but it also means that her appearance gets picked apart constantly. Case in point: Marissa Barrionuevo is a cosmetic surgery assistant in Florida who used to make TikTok videos speculating about what cosmetic procedures celebrities may have undergone. Last year, she made one of these videos about Selena that just recently caught Selena's attention.

I personally don’t like these kinds of videos because what’s the point? It’s like when tabloids get a psychiatrist to offer opinions on what mental illness a celebrity has even though the psychiatrist doesn’t treat that celebrity and is just guessing. Anyway, Marissa was asked to take a guess at what Selena has had done to her face. Check out what she said and how Selena responded in the comments section.

'Can you do Selena?' someone asked.

"I literally have no idea what she has gotten done," Marissa replied in her post. "I think she's been through so much in her life, especially medically related, so I don't think it's fair to speculate whether or not she's gotten cosmetic things done. At the end of the day, let's just leave her be."

OK, cool, but you can’t put side-by-side pictures of Selena from different years out there as part of your post and not expect people to speculate in the comments, right? Which is exactly what happened. There are over 1,200 comments on the post. Many of them are kind, but some—not so much.

The Only Murders in the Building star herself chimed in and wrote: “Honestly I hate this. I was on stripes because of a flare up. I have Botox. That’s it. Leave me alone.” If you’re confused by her use of “stripes,” it appears to be an autocorrect fail for steroids.

In response to Selena's comment, Marissa posted another video.

Keep in mind that Marissa's first video was posted in 2023 and Selena only recently made a comment on it. So the video is not new and in the caption of her response video Marissa wrote:

"Replying to @Selena Gomez although I always try to lead with grace and mindfulness, I am sorry this upset you (and I understand why it did). I decided to stop making videos like this last year because of the negative impact it can cause. It was never my intention. ily I hope we can move past this and be besties."

“I really hope Selena Gomez does not hate me,” Marissa said in the video. “…I agree with you, I do think we should leave you alone and I said that in the video. I totally understand you still not appreciating it.”

For context: Selena was diagnosed with lupus in 2013.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease, which is when your body’s immune system attacks and damages your organs and tissues. Sometimes steroids are used to treat the inflammation caused by lupus. The steroids in turn can have side effects that include weight gain.

Selena shared an Instagram carousel of pictures of herself throughout the years on Sunday, July 28. “Faces, phases,” she captioned the post that shows her face is different phases.
