In the age of celebrities and regular folks alike posting their every move on social media, it's increasingly rare for an A-list star to choose privacy. There are still a handful of celebs who prefer to keep their personal lives almost entirely to themselves. Sandra Bullock, who is known for her roles in films like Miss Congeniality, Gravity, and Bird Box, is someone who falls into this category.
More from MamásLatinas: 8 Latino celebrities that are super private about their kids
From her dating habits to her two kids, Sandra hasn't offered up a ton of information about her day-to-day life outside of Hollywood. She has shared a few anecdotes about her experience adopting two children—a son, Louis, in 2010, and a daughter, Laila, in 2015—but generally avoids details. Many fans might not have known that she had been in a long-term relationship with Bryan Randall until the news of his untimely death in August 2023.
Bryan Randall died in August 2023—and his family revealed he had ALS.
On August 7, Page Six broke the news that Sandra's longtime partner had died two days earlier. “It is with great sadness that we share that on Aug. 5, Bryan Randall passed away peacefully after a three-year battle with ALS,” Bryan's family wrote in a statement, referencing his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
He chose to keep his ALS diagnosis private.
“Bryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private and those of us who cared for him did our best to honor his request," his family said the statement, which People published.
The statement continued: “We are immensely grateful to the tireless doctors who navigated the landscape of this illness with us and to the astounding nurses who became our roommates, often sacrificing their own families to be with ours."
Sandra's sister posted a sweet tribute to him.
Sandra's sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, shared a photo of Bryan on Instagram alongside a touching tribute. "ALS is a cruel disease but there is some comfort in knowing he had the best of caretakers in my amazing sister and the band of nurses she assembled who helped her look after him in their home," she wrote. "Rest in peace, Bryan."
Sandra called him 'the love of my life.'
In December 2021, Sandra spoke about her relationship with Bryan during an appearance on Red Table Talk: "I found the love of my life. We share two beautiful children — three children, [Randall's] older daughter. It's the best thing ever."
She added: "I don't wanna say do it like I do it, but I don't need a paper to be a devoted partner and devoted mother. I don't need to be told to be ever present in the hardest of times. I don't need to be told to weather a storm with a good man."
She also said he was 'the example that I would want my children to have.'
Speaking with Red Table Talk, the actress offered more insight into her dynamic with Bryan — and specifically, who he was a good role model for their kids. "He's the example that I would want my children to have," Sandra said. "…I don't always agree with him, and he doesn't always agree with me. But he is an example even when I don't agree with him."
She added: "I'm stubborn but sometimes I need to sit back and listen and go, 'You're saying it differently but we mean exactly the same thing.'"
What is ALS, exactly?
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a neurological condition affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement — like walking, talking, chewing, etc. Unfortunately, the symptoms of ALS get worse with time, and there's no cure or effective treatment.
In lieu of flowers, Bryan's has requested that donations can be made to the ALS Association and the Massachusetts General Hospital. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
