My mom is visiting and we had so much fun watching the red carpet arrivals at the 2024 Academy Awards, which went down on Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California. The Oscars are the biggest night in Hollywood and stars show up dressed to the elevens because getting dressed to the nines wouldn't be enough.
More from MamásLatinas: The most revealing red carpet looks of all time
The best part about about the fashion on the red carpet is that it doesn't even matter if you've seen all of the movies or performances that were nominated to have an opinion. Here are my opinions on which stars were the best dressed, worst dressed, and somewhere in between on the Academy Awards red carpet this year.
BEST: Becky G in Vera Wang.
I'm not sure why I liked Becky G's red carpet look so much. Maybe it's because of how she carried herself in it. Also, it's giving modernized retro vibes. Like new old Hollywood.
BEST: Lupita Nyong’o in Armani Privé.
Lupita dazzled in a sparkling baby blue gown with feather fringe around her waist and on the hem. Her hair was worn casually and the way it contrasted with her very fancy dress made her look feel fresh and unfussy.
BEST: Anya Taylor-Joy in Dior Haute Couture.
My mom said she loved this dress because it reminded her of a peacock. I see it! Anya wore the heck out of the dress. Her hair worn down and sleek contrasted perfectly with the elaborate detailing of the skirt on the gown.
BEST: America Ferrera in Atelier Versace.
America showed up looking like a crisp bubbly glass of sparking rosé and I love me some sparkling rosé. I also love her blunt bob so much. Her hair was styled so simply and looked so dang healthy. Love the entire look!
BEST: Colman Domingo in custom Louis Vuitton.
He can sing, he can act, and he can dress! I love to see what he's wearing on every red carpet because I always know it's going to be eye-catching and stylish with a dash of flair.
BEST: Eva Longoria in Tamara Ralph Couture.
Oh my, oh my! The woman, the dress! The woman and the dress together. This might be my favorite Eva Longoria look of all time. I love how she wore a dramatic black dress and managed not to look like Morticia Addams. Not that Morticia isn't stunning.
BEST: Ryan Gosling in Gucci.
Who cares what he wears anywhere? He's Ryan Gosling! But he did wear a sassy suit with a bit of chest showing, and if you look at his ankles you can see some funs socks peeking out.
BEST: Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton.
Emma's dress was the lightest shade of sea foam green. She was a vision. The dress was dramatic in cut, subtle in color, and had the most wonderful texture on the skirt that gave it a tapestry vibe.
BEST: Danielle Brooks in Dolce & Gabbana.
What's there not to like about Danielle Brooks' dress? It fit her perfectly and she looked glamorous and comfortable at the same time. Despite the dress being fitted, it didn't seem to be constricting.
BEST: Zendaya in Armani Privé.
On the red carpet, Zendaya's dress was lovely. It shimmered as she posed for pics. Then when she took the stage, the dress played with the light in such a dazzling way that it was mesmerizing.
BEST: Eugene Lee Yang in custom Walter Collection.
Drama? Yes, please! Eugene brought drama and then some to the red carpet in a stunning fitted red suit jacket with a matching voluminous skirt that trailed behind him and was a sight to behold.
BEST: Riz Ahmed in Marni.
The British actor and rapper looked so elegant and cut a fine figure in a monochromatic look with a long coat. He looked like an award statue that anyone would be happy to take home.
BEST: Lily Gladstone in Gucci x Joe Big Mountain.
Fashion is a great way to express yourself and tell a story. I love that Lily Gladstone paid tribute to her Indigenous background. The dress was a collaborative design created by Gucci creative director Sabato De Sarno and Indigenous artist Joe Big Mountain of Ironhorse Quillwork.
IN BETWEEN: Florence Pugh in Del Core.
From certain angles, this dress was like wow and from other angles it was hmmm. Florence looks spectacular in it and I'd say it's more of a best than a worst for sure. But I could see why some wouldn't like it.
IN BETWEEN: Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture.
I chose this one as an in between because I love the dress. The cut, the fit, the pattern. But, the polka dots—even though I love them—make the dress feel like it should be worn to the horse races or a picnic instead of the Oscars.
WORST: Hailee Steinfeld in Ellie Saab Haute Couture.
Both my mother and my husband thought that Hailee's dress was giving Disney princess with a genie vibe. It's not an awful dress, but it's just a bit costumey. I would love it in a musical on Broadway.
WORST: Erika Alexander in Lowe.
Erika Alexander is stunning despite the dress. She glows and her smile is spectacular. The dress is an incohesive kind of something or other, though. She did that dress a favor by wearing it. Lucky dress.
WORST: Andrea Riseborough in Cristian Siriano.
It's not that I dislike the dress the English actress chose, it's just feels wrong for the occasion she chose to wear it to. Perhaps it would work better at a Christmas party.
WORST: Ariana Grande in Giambattista Valli Haute Couture.
I watched the Oscars red carpet with my mom and she thought that it looked like Ariana Grande was wearing "un malavisco rosa muy grande" (a giant pink marshmallow). Her words, not mine, but I agree. Too much floof going on.
WORST: Emily Blunt in Schiparelli Haute Couture.
When I first looked at this dress and thought it was nice, but then I noticed the raised shoulder straps and the outline of chonies on the bottom half and changed my mind. Those shoulder straps looked particularly strange when Emily was seated, almost like she was wearing a cardboard dress that didn't sit quite right on her shoulders.
