Olivia Munn freezes embryos with John Mulaney before hysterectomy amid cancer journey

Olivia Munn is living proof that the behind-the-scenes lives of celebrities can be nothing like what fans might imagine. Recently, the X-Men: Apocalypse actress revealed that she had secretly been battling breast cancer for nearly a year. And now, Olivia shared that she not only had a full hysterectomy but that she froze embryos with her boyfriend, comedian-actor, John Mulaney.

As a refresher, Olivia and John have been romantically linked since May 2021, soon after the comedian split from his wife, Anna Marie Tendler. They welcomed their first child, a son named Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney, in November 2021. In the wake of Olivia's 2023 breast cancer diagnosis, the couple took steps to hopefully still be able to add to their family in the future.

Olivia Munn revealed she had a full hysterectomy.

For a Vogue article published on May 12, Olivia revealed she had a full hysterectomy. “I have now had an oophorectomy and hysterectomy. I took out my uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries," she told the publication. The 43-year-old explained it was "the best" to stop her body from producing estrogen and prevent her cancer from returning.

Before that, she froze embryos with John Mulaney.

Olivia told Vogue that she paused her cancer treatment in order to do an egg retrieval. Ultimately, she and John created "two healthy embryos" through in vitro fertilization. “John and I talked about it a lot, and we don’t feel like we’re done growing our family, but didn’t know if I would have to do chemotherapy or radiation," Olivia explained.

Olivia was diagnosed with luminal B breast cancer in April 2023.

In April 2023, Olivia was diagnosed with luminal B breast cancer in both breasts. This type of cancer is aggressive and fast-growing — as evident by her annual mammogram coming back clear only three months before the diagnosis. Thankfully, her OB-GYN helped her calculate her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score, Healthline reported. This assessment showed Olivia had a 37% lifetime risk, which qualified her for an MRI and led to her getting an ultrasound and a biopsy that detected the cancer.

However, she only revealed her cancer diagnosis in March 2024.

On March 13, Olivia took to Instagram to announce her major health update. "I was diagnosed with breast cancer," she wrote in the caption, alongside a photo of herself in a hospital bed. "I hope by sharing this it will help others find comfort, inspiration and support on their own journey." A carousel of text slides explained her journey in more detail.

Within a month of being diagnosed, she underwent a double mastectomy.

As Olivia told People in April, she underwent three procedures within a month of learning she had breast cancer. They included a lymph node dissection, a nipple delay procedure (to keep her nipples) and a double mastectomy.

“I had amazing doctors, but it was still a negotiation sometimes on what we are doing,” she told the publication. “But I'm glad I did. I want to give myself the best shot of keeping the parts of me that I can keep.”

John has publicly supported his partner following her cancer diagnosis. In the comments of Olivia's Instagram announcement, he wrote, “Thank you for fighting so hard to be here for us. Malc and I adore you. ❤️.”

On Mother's Day, John also celebrated Olivia. In his Instagram Story, he wrote, "My girl," next to Vogue's post about her cover story. He also declared, "My son has the most incredible mommy and he knows it. It's the most loving and silliest relationship I've ever seen. Happy Mother's Day, Liv."
