Madonna has been a household name since the '80s. What fans might not realize, however, is that the pop star was named after her mother, who died in 1963, when Madonna was only 5 years old. For Mother's Day, the "Like a Virgin" singer shared an emotional tribute recalling how she lost her mom. She also shared photos of her own children.

On May 12, Madonna reflected on the last time she saw her mother.
In honor of Mother's Day, Madonna took to Instagram with a lengthy reflection, starting with the death of her mother when she was just 5 years old.
"I stood on stage for 81 shows staring up at the beautiful face of my mother and wondering what she must’ve been thinking as she waved goodbye to me from her hospital window," the "Material Girl" songstress wrote. "I stepped into the station wagon and shut the door not knowing it was the last time I’d see her."
She also shared that she didn't know her mother was dying as a 5-year-old.
"Nobody told me my mother was dying — I just watched her disintegrate mysteriously and then she disappeared," Madonna continued. "There was no explanation except that she had gone to sleep which explains My Tumultuous relationship with sleep."
In her message, Madonna then turned to her six kids.
Madonna's poem-like post then focused on her six kids. She also shared a handful of photos of herself with them.
"Tonight all of my children sleep Under one roof which is Rare and comforting," she wrote. "They grow up too fast and spin out in different directions And yes I have a hard time letting go."
The pop star also reflected on bonding with her children during 'The Celebration Tour.'
During The Celebration Tour, which lasted from mid-October 2023 to early May 2024, Madonna's kids traveled with her across the US and Europe.
"I became very close to my children on this tour," she wrote. "We clung to each other. In the long hours we worked and struggled. They helped me manifest my dreams. In the chaos and the storms the monotony and repetition. The sleepless nights and the endless Packing and unpacking. All the sacrifices. We made together."
Additionally, she recalled memories and milestones during the tour.
Madonna continued to reflect on touring with her children. In her post, she wrote, "Along the way Rocco was painting. Lola was writing songs. David and Mercy graduated high school!"
Finally, Madonna turned her musing to motherhood as a whole.
"No Easy way into the motherhood game. No manual or University. Just trial and error and learn and succeed and then fail again," she wrote. "Finally the realization that they were raising me and not the other way around.
Madonna continued, "I always laugh with friends and say motherhood = suffering. But it’s not a joke. It’s the truest thing I’ve ever said. But I wouldn’t change it for anything."
