Joe Manganiello & Sofía Vergara’s divorce: all the details—did they sign a prenup?

Sofía Vergara is best known for her role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the ABC series Modern Family—for which she was nominated for four Emmys Awards and four Golden Globe Awards. Others might recognize her as a judge on America's Got Talent. Either way, it's clear that Sofía is a talented actress and TV personality. All is not perfect in Sofía's personal life, though, as the accomplished celebrity is currently going through a divorce from her husband of seven years, actor Joe Manganiello.

Joe and Sofía met in 2014 at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, through her Modern Family costar, Jesse Tyler Ferguson. In December of that year, Joe proposed, and they married in November 2015. Although Joe, 46, and Sofía, 51, don't have any children together, they do have a Chihuahua named Bubbles. Let's take a closer look at the details surrounding their divorce.

News broke in July 2023 that Joe and Sofía had decided to divorce.

In a joint statement published by Page Six, Sofía and Joe revealed the end of their marriage. "We have made the difficult decision to divorce," they wrote on July 17. “As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives.”

Why are they divorcing—what happened?

As of writing, neither Sofía nor Joe have shared details about what led to their split. The divorce paperwork, which Joe filed two days after they announced their separation, cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason. The date of separation was listed as July 2, 2023.

TMZ reported that one reason for the divorce is "conflict over having children," noting that Joe wanted kids with Sofía but she did not. (She already has an adult son, Manolo Gonzalez Vergara, whom she shares with her first husband Joe Gonzalez.)

Meanwhile, a source told People, "He really wanted to have a baby with her and she wasn't interested and it caused a rift."

A source said Sofía and Joe had been 'growing apart' for years.

A source close to Sofía offered further insight into the reason for the divorce. “They have been growing apart for some time now and tried to resolve things, but they are focused on different areas of their lives,” the unnamed insider told People.

The source added: “They definitely love and respect each other but once that initial passion dies down and other areas get in the way, then little differences get bigger."

Did Joe and Sofía have a prenup?

Joe and Sofía did have a prenup in place, TMZ reported. According to the signed agreement, they will each keep assets accumulated during their marriage. The divorce may be pretty straightforward, then — especially since they don't have children together. (Although, they do have a Chihuahua named Bubbles.)

Looking back, there were a few signs pointing to relationship trouble.

Since news of Sofía and Joe's divorce broke, fans have looked back and spotted subtle signs of relationship trouble. In August 2022, she took her son as her plus-one (instead of Joe) to Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams' wedding. And in June 2023, they listed their $18 million home for sale for the second time in a year. The last time Sofía posted a photo of Joe was June 29 — a clear indication, in hindsight, that things were heading south.

Hopefully, the prenup will help make Sofía and Joe's divorce proceed smoothly. We wish both of them the best moving forward.
