In the early ’90s, Jen made her TV debut as a Fly Girl on In Living Color. She snagged her first big movie role in 1995 in My Family before catapulting to fame as Selena Quintanilla in the 1997 biopic Selena. J.Lo’s acting and music careers took off from there—and she turned 55 in 2024.

Recently, J.Lo spoke to Variety about her 30-year career.

On December 15, Jennifer spoke with Variety‘s Clayton Davis about her 30-plus years in the entertainment industry. A video obtained by TMZ showed the pair sitting on stage and talking about her long-running career. That’s when Clayton marveled at the longevity of her creative work.

The interviewer noted Jen was 'getting up there in age.'

“Listen, I can’t believe it’s been 30 years since Selena,” Clayton said at one point during the Variety interview. “I can’t believe that 30 years we do the retrospective of this and you will be 60 by then.”

After Jennifer replied, “Wow,” Clayton noted, “Which is getting up there.”

Jen then simply acknowledged, “I am.”

The audience mostly laughed in response to Clayton’s comment. However, one spectator in the TMZ video asked, “Did he really just say that?”

Although Clayton praised J.Lo for “one of your best performances” in her new film Unstoppable, she brought the topic back to her age.

“It’s funny you think that I’m getting up there,” Jen said, to which he said it was a “joke.”

Jennifer then addressed the audience.

“It’s because I want to say thank you, you guys. Because we’ve been doing this a long time together. Been doing it a long time and you guys have been here with me,” Jen said. “Today, I was singing some new songs and I went back and sang ‘If You Had My Love,’ which is my first song, 1999. It’s that thing, of like, what a journey this has been.”

Additionally, she promised 'the best was yet to come.'

“I honestly feel that the best is yet to come,” Jennifer added. “I honestly feel that my creativity and who I am as an artist—like you said, I also feel that this for me, was another kind of level for me of going deeper into who I am as a person, as an artist.”

She added, “And if you can kind of let yourself be vulnerable enough and real enough to show you flaws and to really expose yourself in a way, as an artist, that is a gift that you always want. “You want to have that.”

J.Lo previously addressed aging—and her lack thereof.

In 2018, Jennifer spoke with Emmy Magazine about fans thinking she looks young for her age.

“Listen, at some point, I’m going to age,” she joked, per Closer Weekly. “They’ll say, she looks old! But, right now, I’m holding it together.”

However, she admitted her day would one day come.

At the time of the Emmy Magazine interview, Jennifer was dating Alex Rodriguez. She shared an anecdote about an observation he made about her.

“The other day, Alex was across the lawn, and I brought him something, and then I ran away. And he said, ‘You run like you’re 25 years old,’” she recounted. “I haven’t stopped that pace, so I’m still at that pace, I guess. When things start aching more, it’ll be different.”
