It’s official: Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from Ben Affleck

The marital strife rumors were true: Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are getting divorced. August 20, 2024, will go down in pop culture history as the day that Jennifer Affleck filed for divorce from her fourth husband Ben Affleck. Bennifer 2.0 is donezo and the timing does not seem random since August 20, 2022, was the day that they celebrated their second wedding ceremony with a lavish affair on Ben’s Georgia estate. Their first wedding was a surprise Las Vegas ceremony that went down on July 16, 2022.

Not that anyone is asking, but I am taking the news of their divorce personally because ever since rumors that their marriage was in trouble started swirling in May, I have been in denial. I even kept reminding you, dear readers, that a rumor is a rumor until confirmed. Well, it’s confirmed! I’ve got some facts for you on how Jen filed for divorce coming right up.

Jen filed the divorce petition herself.

TMZ reports that Jen filed the divorce documents on Tuesday pro per, which is an abbreviation for the Latin phrase “propria persona.” In simple English, she filed the papers herself and is representing herself instead of using a lawyer.

She listed the date of separation as April 26, 2024.

Excuse me while I sit down to gobble up some crow because I refused to believe the rumors that their marriage was in trouble. Never mind that Ben didn’t go with Jen to the Met Gala on the first Monday in May even though she was a cochair. Or that he moved out of their marital home while she was vacationing in Europe.

Is there a prenup?

The legal documents do not mention a prenup and according to sources that spoke to TMZ, there is no prenup. That means that there is community property to be divvied up. In July, they listed the home they bought together for $68 million, presumably they will split the funds once it sells. Any money they made during their two-year marriage can also be considered community property to be split.

What about spousal support?

Amazon Studios' World Premiere Of "AIR" - Arrivals

The documents state that Jen is waiving spousal support and asking for the judge to deny spousal support for Ben. Yeah, I think they are both fine to earn their own money post-split. I’m not worried about either one of them ending up in the poor house.

This Hollywood ending sucks.

"Gigli" - Premiere

I wanted them to live happily ever after because I remember them from back in the day and hoped this romance reboot would stick. They fell in love after working together on the set of Gigli in 2001, got engaged in 2002, postponed their wedding in 2003, and broke up in 2004.

Roll the credits, the sequel is over.

Then 17 years later, in 2021, they got back together. Jen had been married and divorced three times by then and had twins Emme and Max when she was married to Marc Anthony. Ben had been married to Jennifer Garner and before their divorce they had kids—Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel.

Now, Ben and Jen are done, again. I wish I could re-write this ending, but looks like the Hollywood romance is in the can for good. Boooooooo!
