Eva Mendes dishes on why she stepped back from acting after having kids with Ryan Gosling

Both the media and fans have a way of becoming obsessed with celebrity couples. When stars date or marry other stars, a full-on frenzy for photos, "inside scoops," and any details about their relationship ensues. However, some celebs completely opt out of the circus and can maintain an impressive level of privacy—and that includes Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes.

The actors first sparked dating rumors back in 2011 while filming a movie together. In 2014, Eva and Ryan welcomed their first child, a daughter they named Esmeralda. Two years later, the couple added a second daughter, Amada, to their family.

During a recent interview, Eva opened up about why she stepped back from acting around the time their first child was born.

Eva praised her husband for his work ethic during a 'Today' interview.

During a Today interview that aired on March 26, Eva reflected on Ryan's work ethic. The couple worked together on the 2013 film The Place Beyond the Pines.

"I have never experienced anything like that," she said. "The way he works, his commitment to his craft, how he wants to make everything as best as it can be, and that means making his costars as best as they can be."

She also opened up about why she stepped back from acting.

"I pretty much stopped acting after that," Eva said of falling in love with Ryan on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines.

Not long after, they welcomed their first child. "It was almost just like a non-verbal agreement," she explained. "It was like, 'Ok, he’s going to work and I’m going to work, I’m just going to work here.'"

Eva hasn't completely stepped away from work.

A quick look at Eva's IMDb profile reveals she hasn't officially retired from acting. In 2021, she voiced a yoga instructor on the kids' animated series, Bluey. (She gets some "cool mom" points for that one!) Additionally, Eva wrote a children's picture book, Desi, Mami, and the Never-Ending Worries.

Eva and Ryan have kept their kids' lives out of the spotlight.

For Eva and Ryan, keeping their daughters out of the spotlight is a top priority. This started with her pregnancies, as both times Eva was expecting, no one outside of their inner circle knew about it until she was roughly seven months along. “They are trying to keep their daughters’ lives as normal as possible and don’t want them growing up in Hollywood,” a source told Us Weekly.

They are also private about their relationship.

As fans have likely noticed, Eva and Ryan have not made red carpet appearances together. They avoid posting personal couple photos on social media, too.

"We don't do those things together," she wrote in an Instagram reply, per People, adding she is "only comfortable" posting photos that are already publicly available.

Ryan, however, is more than comfortable singing Eva's praises from time to time. In January, he name-dropped his wife while accepting an award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

"I for one have been so lucky. Most importantly, I got to meet the girl of my dreams, Eva Mendes, and have two dream children," he said. "I dreamed of one day making movies, and now, movies have made my life a dream."

Eva gave Ryan a playful Instagram shoutout following his Oscars performance.

On March 10, Ryan performed "I'm Just Ken" from the Barbie movie at the 2024 Oscars. Eva did not join her husband at the event. However, she took to Instagram to give him a rare shoutout. "You took Ken all the way to the Oscar’s, RG," the mom of two wrote. "Now come home, we need to put the kids to bed. "
