Demi Lovato, Cardi B & other stars react to Trump supporters’ Capitol siege

Like many Americans, songstress Demi Lovato, 28, was stunned on Wednesday when supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol building. The angry mob that overtook the US Capitol Police on Wednesday afternoon tore through the Capitol, breaking doors, destroying offices, and replacing American flags with Trump flags. According to NPR, the siege resulted in at least four deaths, more than a dozen injured police officers, and at least 70 arrests.

The "Commander in Chief" singer, along with a number of other celebrities, echoed the outrage of many American citizens who essentially witnessed an act of terrorism against the US government and its democratic process as the Trump supporters attempted to halt a vote by Congress to certify President-elect Joe Biden's victory.

"Horrible day for our country. I have no words right now while watching the news," Demi captioned an Instagram post.

Demi started by reposting Instagram users condemning the riot.

Demi, who was quite vocal about her disapproval of Donald Trump throughout the 2020 election season as well as about the injustices toward people of color that have come to light in the past year, initially reposted a comment she had seen on fellow performer Lauren Jauregui's Instagram account from Instagram user Indyamoore. The post was about the difference between how the violent and destructive Trump supporters were addressed by law enforcement and how Black and brown protestors have traditionally been handled in the US.

Like many, she was astonished.

As the media released more images and videos from the scenes of the siege, like many Americans and even people throughout the world, Demi expressed shock by what she was seeing, particularly images of the Trump supporters desecrating rooms and offices inside the Capitol building.

She voiced what many of us were already thinking and feeling.

As the day went on, Demi also took to her Instagram story to react in real time. She captioned a post on her story:

"I'm embarrassed
Ashamed
And so sad with what's happening.
Trump needs to be impeached tonight."

Demi went on to voice her disappointment at Trump's supporters.

Demi shared a post from author Carlos Whittaker, who said, "This guy and his flag walking the halls of the capital in support of that phrase is why when we see MAGA hats, and hear MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN…People that look like me get physically nauseous," in reaction to a photo of a man walking through the Capitol brandishing a large Confederate flag.

She's done trying to "keep the peace."

Demi posted the same photo on her own Instagram story with the caption, "Yep. I'm absolutely done trying to keep the peace." The singer and mental health advocate asserted, "Family + friends that voted for trump, let's have a talk about what you supported."

Finally, she shared a poignant post from Black Lives Matter.

Demi ended the night by sharing a post from Black Lives Matter pointing at the lack of police action at the Capitol compared to the brutality that many Black people have been met with for protesting against police violence.

"My heart is broken. It makes me too sad to believe how naive I was to think this couldn't possibly happen, and yet it did. Here we are," she said, also teasing new music inspired by the devastating events of the day.

Actress, producer, and activist America Ferrera made sure to point out that after everything that occurred yesterday, there were six Republican senators who argued in Donald Trump's defense, claiming election fraud when Congress eventually reconvened to certify the election.

Actress and producer Eva Longoria took a more positive outlook and shared a post from the Upworthy Instagram account that highlighted the female Senate aides who had the foresight to rescue the paper electoral ballots before evacuating the Capitol building. While there are electronic versions of the ballots, losing the paper ballots could have slowed down the certification of Biden's win.

Cardi B spoke up about the apparent double standard.

As we've come to expect from her, rapper Cardi B was also quick to point out the apparent double standard between how people protesting against unjust police brutality and violence toward people of color were addressed and how the Capitol rioters were handled.

Khloé Kardashian couldn't ignore the racial aspect.

Khloé Kardashian also tweeted regarding the racial aspect, pointing out the difference in how the mostly white mob was handled and how people of color would have been treated. "The epitome of white privilege! How disturbing!!! I am sick to my stomach!" she captioned a series of disturbing photos from inside the Capitol.

AOC's response was succinct, but impactful.

"For now, we must focus on task at hand: to preserve the integrity of our democracy, hold accountable those responsible for their attempts to subvert our nation’s elections and shred our Constitution apart," Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted after being sequestered with other members of Congress for hours.

J.Lo retweeted the president-elect.

Jennifer Lopez, who has been relatively quiet about her political leanings until the most recent presidential election season when she supported Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, took a minute out of her beach vacation to retweet President-elect Biden.

Vice President-elect Harris responded with dignity.

Senator Kamala Harris, who will be the next vice president of the United States, responded in agreement with Joe Biden during the siege when she tweeted that the rioters should "allow the work of democracy to go forward," calling for an end to the "assault" on the Capitol.
