Who has unlimited funds for a vacation? I don't and yet my family and I have had great fun and traveled to amazing places. Here are my best tips on how to stretch your dollars when traveling. You can have the trip of a lifetime on a shoestring budget — all it takes is a little planning, a bit of resourcefulness, and a ton of patience.
Choose your destination early
Whether you're planning on going far or taking a roadtrip with your family, the most important part of traveling is making sure to plan way ahead of time. There are well-known hacks to save in different ways, but also planning with ample time almost guarantees the best rates for everything from places to stay to campsites and attractions.
Consider a camping trip
Some of the best family memories are created when you are on an adventure. To stay comfortably, travel in an RV — you’ll get to explore the outdoors, go on adventures, and still have a warm place to sleep at night. All national parks have special areas for campers. Check out the site www.nationalparks.com for ideas and information.
Stay with family and friends
Travel prices can really add up, so why not avoid them when you can? When staying with family make sure to contribute with groceries, offer to help with chores, and cook at least one of the nights.
Plan your meals
Pack snacks and meals to take with you when possible. A picnic is often more fun for children than a meal in a restaurant. Give every member of your family a water bottle they can refill. This will not only avoid dehydration, but will save you money on drinks.
Splurge at least once
Be sure to splurge at least once on a fancy dinner, hit up a well-known restaurant in the area where you're staying, or order in for breakfast. If you're traveling in an RV, you've managed to save a ton on your food bills, but be sure to try something different at least once during your trip. Food is one of the memories most of us remember the most from our vacations!
Research, research, research
I cannot stress this enough. Every major city has discount packages for tourists if you buy tickets to attractions and meals together. This even applies at theme parks like Disney World or other big attractions.
Limit your luggage
It's doable! Aim to have one small carry-on bag per person traveling. You can make plans to do laundry and take just what's necessary.
Don't buy silly souvenirs
That sign that says I Love… looks great in the store, but where are you really going to put it at home? Don't buy anything that you can't imagine in your house. Seriously! Save your money for experiences and things that are more meaningful than a bunch of cheap souvenirs.
