Jorge Mario Bergoglio is the eldest of five children. His family immigrated to Argentina from Italy. His dad was an accountant while his mom was a stay-at-home mom.

In the 1960's, the Pope served as a young seminarian. During this time, he crushed on a girl he met, which made him question whether he should pursue a religious career. Lucky, he still did.

He has a sense of humor

The Pope knows how to have a good laugh. In 2014, he did just that after a young woman acting in a live nativity scene placed a lamb on his shoulders in Rome, Italy. Looks like fun!

Unlike his successors, Pope Francis decided early on not to live in the papal palace to have "a closer connection with God." It speaks to his humble, and slightly rebellious, heart.

While addressing Congress in Washington, D.C., this week, the Pope urged politicians to embrace immigrants. "We must not be taken aback by their numbers, but rather view them as persons, seeing their faces and listening to their stories, trying to respond as best as we can to their situation," he said.

He gets emotional

While giving his sermons, the first Latino Pope has gotten teary-eyed from time to time. Here he is at Saint Peter's square at the Vatican back in 2013.

He's progressive

Pope Francis has distinguished himself for his liberal views, way more progressive than others that came before him. He believes the church is "obsessed" with abortion, same-sex marriage and contraception. He's all about letting God be the ultimate judge, which is a dramatic and forward-thinking shift.

He's proud of his roots

The Argentinean Pope loves his people and joking about them too. "I surprised everyone by choosing to call myself 'Francis.' Being Argentine, they expected I would call myself 'Jesus II,'" he playfully said.

He's a rock star
