10 Latino celebs who kicked rehab’s butt

Rehab sucks! It sucks for the people who have to go through it and it sucks for their families and friends. You have to be REALLY brave to get through rehab. It's not easy to admit when you're wrong and it's even harder to admit that you've got a problem and an addiction.

Demi Lovato is one of those really brave people. Earlier this week, the X Factor judge–who has been talking candidly about her issues with depression, drug use and bipolar disorder for several years now–revealed shocking new details about her addiction to cocaine: "I couldn't go without 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes," Demi told Access Hollywood.

"I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there …"

While some people might judge Demi for a confession like that, we're proud of Demi for her courage and for kicking her addiction to the curb. She's a strong girl!

And she's not the only one: Check out 10 Latino celebs who kicked rehab's butt!

We don't need to fill you in on Demi's story–you know all about it. And the reason you know all about it, is that Demi has bravely told her story over and over again in the hopes that it will help other addicts beat the illness. If that's not inspiring, we don't know what is!

Michelle Rodriguez

In December of 2005, the Fast and the Furious star was busted for driving under the influence (and it wasn’t the first time). As a result, Rodriguez was sentenced to 60 days in jail and ordered to complete a 30-day alcohol rehabilitation program. Today, Rodriguez is one of the most successful Latina movie stars in Hollywood–second only to Cameron Diaz–and she's been delivering brilliant performances in films like Avatar, Fast & Furious 6, and Machete Kills. Go, Michelle!

Oscar de la Hoya

De la Hoya has been struggling with alcohol and cocaine abuse for years and back in September, the Mexican American boxer voluntarily checked himself into rehab to battle these issues. "This is the biggest fight of my life," de la Hoya told Univision two years ago. “I could put all my opponents in one ring and battle all of them, but this monster is going to be the toughest fight of my life." This week it was announced that de la Hoya was released after completing a 90 day substance abuse program in rehab. "Oscar is doing really well and is now going to lots of (AA) meetings and determined to follow his after care program," Fox News reports. Talk about a K.O!

In late November, the 20/20 anchor revealed in a tweet that she was out of rehab for alcohol abuse. “Hello everyone! I am home, and so grateful for all your support and well wishes. I am so much better and taking it one day at a time." We love Elizabeth, especially because when she entered rehab, she released this beautiful message to her followers:

Like so many people, I am dealing with addiction. I realized I was becoming increasingly dependent on alcohol. And feel fortunate to have recognized it for the problem it was becoming. I am in treatment and am so thankful for the love and support of my family, friends and colleagues at ABC News. Like so many others, I will deal with this challenge one day at a time. If coming forward today gives one other person the courage to seek help, I’m grateful.

We hope others learned from her philosophy of taking it one day at a time.

Of all the celebs who have gone to rehab in Hollywood, Nicole Richie has undoubtedly undergone the biggest transformation. The former Simple Life star–who allegedly entered rehab for an addiction to heroin–has transformed into the responsible mother of two beautiful children: Harlow Winter Kate Madden and son Sparrow James Midnight Madden. "People ask me, do I blame Hollywood or my parents?" Richie told InStyle U.K. in 2010. "No, I don't blame my parents. It had nothing to do with them. I created it and manifested it, and I got myself through it with the help of a lot of great people," she said.

She may be one of the most gifted artists of all time–and a great mom to "Dem Babies!" Moroccan and Monroe–but Mariah Carey has dealt with addiction. In 2001, Mimi was hospitalized for extreme exhaustion and a physical and emotional breakdown and she stayed under medical supervision for two weeks.

We were surprised when Eva Mendes entered rehab a few years ago, but we were also impressed by her courage. "I'm proud of people who have the determination and the fearlessness to actually go and face their demons and get better," Mendes said of her decision to get help. "This is a life or death situation."

Charlie Sheen

In January of 2011, the actor checked himself into rehab. "Charlie Sheen has voluntarily entered an undisclosed rehabilitation center today," Sheen’s publicist Stan Rosenfield said in a statement at the time. "He is most grateful to all who have expressed their concern." Since then, Charlie has managed to launch yet another successful sitcom, Anger Management.
