I've been guilty of thinking that a generic item isn't as good as a name brand. This isn't necessarily true, IF you know which things you can get away with buying to spare a few bucks.

Infant formula: Every mother might freak out at the thought of this, but generic infant formula is as safe as its counterpart. Thanks to the Infant Formula Act, this product MUST be approved by the FDA before it goes on the shelves.
Over-the-counter medication: It might sound risky buying generic medication, but it turns out it has the same contents as a name brand. Doctors do heed that caution is taken when it comes to taking prescription generic medication.
Gasoline: With gas prices going through the roof, you want to save as much money as you can. In fact buying generic gas works just as well as brand name and can save you as much as 20 cents a gallon.
