Though her death has left many–including myself–feeling heartbroken, I also think many feel grateful just to have been able to hear and at times even witness, her powerful story. In her too-short life, she influenced countless people and taught the world some valuable lessons.

Below, check out important things I (and I hope others) learned from the inspiring teen. We'll miss you, Talia.

I never ceased to be amazed at Castellano's unwavering strength and hopefulness, even in the face of all the pain and suffering she was going through. That determination helped her not only beat the disease multiple times over six years, but also to become the star she was.

Embrace color

Castellano embraced color, both in beauty and other aspects of life. She lived brightly– something I think we can all aspire to do as well.

Beauty isn't skin-deep

Though the 13-year-old was lovely with or without her beloved makeup, I think what struck people the most about her was her amazing spirit. Castellano seemed to radiate everywhere she went–and that glow never faded even during her final days.

Be yourself

Scrolling through the comments left on Castellano's official Facebook page, I can't tell you how many people thanked her for showing them that it's okay to just be and be themselves, even if others consider that "different." And I have to agree! I don't think anyone can argue that Castellano set her own path.

Follow your passion

Castellano loved anything involving beauty and makeup and she never let anything, even her illness, get in the way of her pursuing that passion.

Dreams do come true!

Castellano put a lot of herself into her YouTube videos and all that effort paid off. Soon, her videos had racked up millions of hits and eventually caught the attention of Ellen DeGeneres, who featured Castellano on her show and made her an honorary CoverGirl.
