Jessie Frank was flying from Washington to Atlanta on June 13 and was anxious to make it home in time to pick up her 12-year-old daughter, who had been at a Georgia summer camp for kids with Type I diabetes. But her travels had not gone smoothly–what supposed to be a two-hour flight had turned into an entire day at the airport after a series of delays and cancellations.
Despite help from several airline employees, Frank eventually found herself at number 8 on the stand-by list, with zero seats available on her now end-of-day flight. So imagine her surprise when she called to the gate and told to board. A "vaguely familiar" man not in uniform met her at the doorway, helped stow her luggage and showed her to her seat. It was only as her flight prepared to land in Atlanta that the flight announced there was a special guest riding in the jump seat of the cockpit that she realized who that man was–the CEO Richard Anderson!
Frank was so touched by Anderson's generous act, she posted an open letter of thanks to him on Facebook, which has since gone viral. "You, Richard Anderson, the CEO of Delta, did all that for me, just an average, middle-aged, woman with, as far as anyone at Delta knew, no special reason to get home," she wrote.
What an awesome, feel-good story! Its small but significant acts like Anderson's that truly make the most difference. They make you realize there are still people in the world that will go out of their way just to brighten someone else's day a little. And it's a great example for Anderson to set for the rest of his company. Hopefully, others will take note!
