In a story that is sure to melt even the toughest of hearts, a recently adopted dog escaped his new home and walked 10 miles back to the shelter–all to find his mate!
Apparently, two stray German Shepherd mixes, Ben and Jade, had stuck together for years, roaming the streets of Terre Haute, Indiana for a long time before getting taken in by the Humane Society Shelter when Jade was giving birth to puppies. Throughout the whole ordeal, they remained side by side. But eventually, Ben was adopted by local couple Courtney and Jason Lawler and the two had to be separated. The pooch was left devastated–which is why, about three weeks after his adoption, he decided to take action.

While his owner was taking out the trash, Ben didn't hesitate to take the opportunity to escape. He bolted out the open door and began a long journey, reportedly crossing 10 miles of busy streets, railroad tracks, and fields in cold temperatures. Twenty-four hours later and against all odds, he had made it back to the shelter to see Jade. The dog was so happy to be reunited with his mate, he reportedly started licking her face through the fence when he saw her. Aww! Isn't that just the sweetest thing you've ever heard?
And his bold move paid off! After seeing how bonded the two dogs were, the Lawlers decided to adopt Jade too. Today, Ben and Jade are back to being as inseparable as ever.
I just love this story! I can't believe that Ben actually succeeded in his quest to find Jade on his own. That's one smart dog!! But what truly makes the situation amazing is that the Lawlers decided to take in Jade too, instead of ignoring her or bringing Ben back to the shelter like many others would've done. Now everyone gets a happy ending.
