In a story even more horrifying than the hoopla over Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas' hair this past summer, an African American meteorologist in Louisiana defended her ethnic hair after reading racist comments on Facebook. She gave a lovely, cordial response and brought the issue to her employers, who said they would deal with it but instead fired her a few weeks later. But in a complete turn around of her bad luck, she's now receiving TONS of support and love from her fans.

Meteorologist Rhonda Lee, who previously worked at KTBS in Shreveport, Louisiana, says that she was moved to tears because of all of the support that she has received after being fired. According to the New York Daily News, she has been flooded with comments from well-wishers and has even seen online petitions demanding that she be rehired. She tells them how she felt after the love from her fans:
I would never have dreamed in a million years that I would get all this support. It's been a tough go at first to not be angry, but mostly I'm just sad. I genuinely loved where I worked. I loved my viewers. I made my home here.

You can see some of the fan support on her Facebook page and it touches my heart, too. I personally was appalled when viewer Emmitt Vascocu wrote on the stations' Facebook page back in October that "she needs to wear a wig or grow some more hair." It's a disgustingly racist comment and her response, where she says that she is "very proud of my African-American ancestry which includes my hair… Women come in all shapes, sizes, nationalities, and levels of beauty. Showing little girls that being comfortable in the skin and HAIR God gave me is my contribution to society."
I say: hear, hear, Rhonda! I hope that the support she's getting now will mean bigger and better things for her career.
