Ah, the New Year! Time for a fresh start, out with the old, in with the new…that whole spiel. And along with New Year's comes those dreaded New Year's resolutions. So many people make them, but few really stick to them during the year.
I particularly have never been fond of making resolutions because I find when joining a crowd on the same fad, I end up accomplishing less. And, really, why do we need to wait until the new year for a fresh start?
Being aware that I'm trying to achieve the same goal at the same time as others doesn't necessarily do much to motivate me. In fact I think we get lazier as a group when we conform–unless being competitive is in your nature. I like challenging myself to be better than what I was before instead of being better than someone else. After all in life our goal is to achieve our best selves, right?
I guess there's a sense of unity and support when people make a resolution together, but at the same time once one person becomes less motivated, the rest follow. It's not to say that I don't have any goals or ambitions for 2013. In fact I have a few, but I don't want to jump on the New Year's resolution bandwagon to get me started.
Although I do applaud those who make a goal at the beginning of the year and stick to it until it's accomplished. I'd say I'm more of a mid-year resolutions person. And those goals I make start out small and increase with time.
The one thing I do like doing on New Year's Eve is reflecting on what I have accomplished in the past year and how things have changed. I'm definitely in a better place this year than I was last year and hope that 2013 brings more joy. I also hope the new year brings all of you much good health and happiness! Enjoy the festivities and may you ring it in with all your loved ones!
