The 10 most inspiring animal heroes of 2012

Since I can remember, I've been a dog person through and through. And although our pets can't speak, they still do wonderful things that the average human can't do. This past year we learned about so many amazing pets that it's hard to ignore their heroic efforts.

Whether their owners were in trouble or their own were simply in need of a helping hand, these pets were present and their loyalty was proven in their actions. I mean who can forget the puppies who kept that lost boy warm throughout the night or that dog who saved a newborn's life? If you haven't heard of these stories then you MUST read on!

I know if I was in my trouble my dog would be by my side in a heartbeat, so it was no surprise to hear that there were so MANY pets willing to do the same for their owners. This past year has been so eventful that we just had to pay tribute to these amazing animals. Which is why we created a list of the 10 most heroic pets of 2012!

Check out this list and tell us which of these stories is your favorite. It really is hard for me to choose since they've all proven to be the bravest and most adorable dogs. But you be the judge!

Blackie the oldest adopted dog

Blackie touched our hearts as he's the oldest dog to be put for adoption. At 19 years old, his owners could no longer care for him and put him in a shelter. Thankfully a kind soul came along and gave him a new home!

Dasher the protector

Dasher made headlines after protecting his 2-year-old owner, Dante Berry. Dante had been playing in front of his house when he wandered off alarming his parents. Thankfully he had Dasher protecting him the whole time!

Bear the lifeguard

Little Stanley Drauch has a lot to be thankful for after his black labrador, Bear saved him after he fell in the pool. He had wandered off from his mom's site and boy was she thankful Bear was there the whole time!

The nurturer

An abandoned newborn baby in Ghana was lucky after a black lab spent the whole night cradling him under a bridge. Amazing how dogs can be so nurturing!

Bingo the Fighter

Bingo is a service dog who has saved the life of 11-year-old Cole Hein many times. Cole suffers from a breathing disorder, but now the pup is sick which made Cole create a lick list for his furry friend. He even made a Facebook page and asked fans to send him treats from all over!

The Survivor

Kilo gets the award for brave pup because he saved his owner's life after their home was broken into. The would-be criminal shot Kilo and ran away. Kilo miraculously survived after the gunshot wound only exited through his neck. What a trooper!

Dog of the Year

Poor Fiona was abandoned and thrown in  the garbage about 2 years ago. But a couple rescued her and created a youtube video documenting it. The video got so many hits and brought awareness to protecting homeless pets.

These amazing puppies kept 10-year-old Kyle Camp warm after he went missing from his home. Boy were his parents and cops relieved to see him safe and well protected!

A couple can thank their dog Duke for saving their baby girl Harper one night after she stopped breathing. The owners say the dog was trembling on their bed, something he never did, and when they decided to check in on their baby, they noticed she wasn't breathing giving them enough time to take her to the hospital to get help.
