Mamás Latinas who should be on the “Makers: Women Who Make America” list

March is Women's History Month and AOL and PBS are kicking it off by launching a digital video broadcast initiative called "MAKERS: Women Who Make America." The development spotlights 100 women from all different industries, including 10 amazing Latinas, such as Linda Alvarado and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

We LOVE the idea behind the project, and we hope their list isn't missing some pretty remarkable Latina celebrity moms. After all, these women not only make groundbreaking strides in their fields, but they do it while also juggling kids and family at home.

Here's who we would put on the MAKERS list:

  1. Gloria Estefan: The Cuban-born singer and actress is known as the "Queen of Latin Pop. A 3-time Grammy winner and a 4-time Latin Grammy winner, Estefan is in the top 100 best selling music artists with over 100 million albums sold worldwide. She has two kids, a son and a daughter, with long-time husband, Emilio Estefan.

  2. Hilda Solis: Solis is the 25th US Secretary of Labor, serving in the Obama administration. She grew up in California with her parents, who were immigrants from Nicaragua and Mexico. She was the first Hispanic woman to serve in the State Senate and defeated a long-time Democratic incumbent when she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000. She took office under Obama in February 2009, becoming the first Latina to serve in the US Cabinet.
  3. Jessica Alba: The Latina starlet is known as much for her films, like Fantastic Four and Little Fockers, as she is for being considered one the most desirable women in America. The actress has spent a considerable amount of time doing charity work, participating with Habitat for Humanity, Project HOME, Revlon Run/Walk for Women and more. Alba has two daughters with husband Cash Warren. She has most recently created a mom-friendly line, The Honest Company–a monthly service that delivers customized bundles of non- toxic, eco-friendly, adorable products directly to your front door.
  4. Nely Galán: Born in Cuba, Galan made a name for herself in the media world early in life. At the age of 22, Galan became the nation's youngest station manager for WNJU TV Channel 47, the station that became the launchpad for what is now the Telemundo Network. She has worked with HBO, Time Warner, and Fox. In 1994, Galán founded Galan Entertainment, a production and marketing firm which focuses on creating "crossover" Latino programming. In 1998, Sony named her President of Entertainment for Telemundo, making her the first Latina network president. After leaving Telemundo, she returned to her own business and has recently launched two web sites targeting women: msmogul.com and thenewyoutv.com. Galán is also a devoted mom to her son, who was born in 2000.

  5. Salma Hayek: Hayak left a successful career in Mexico to make an even bigger one in Hollywood. She has become one of the best-known Latina actresses, receiving an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of artist Frida Kahlo in Frida. Hayek has also worked to help mothers in developing nations, teaping up with Pampers and UNICEF to raise awareness. She gave birth to daughter, Valentina, in September 2007.

  6. Carolina Herrera: The Venezuelan fashion designer founded her renowned company in 1980. Since then, her clothes have dominated Fashion Week runways and won multiple awards from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. She's also cultivated an eponymous label of classics into a separate lifestyle brand called CH Carolina Herrera. The designer has four daughters from two different marriages.
  7. Natalie Morales: The current news anchor for NBC's Today, Morales was previously an anchor and correspondent for MSNBC where she covered a number of major news stories there including the 2004 presidential election, the 2004 Summer Olympics, the Iraqi prisoner abuse and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Originally born in Taiwan to a Brazilian mother and Puerto Rican father, Morales speaks Spanish and Portuguese. Morales married Joe Rhodes on August 22, 1998. They have two sons, Joseph and Luke.
