- It doesn't matter whether you choose an electric or manual toothbrush so long as it fits your mouth size (you shouldn't have to be stretching your mouth super wide to reach spots). Also, go for soft bristles so you don't damage your gums over time and swap your brush out for a new one every four months.
- No rushing! Strive for a two-minute brushing session at least twice a day. Make it three times a day if you're really trying to ace this routine. Any more than that and you might be doing more harm than good as the tooth enamel can start to wear away.
- According to WebMD, the best technique for cleaning your teeth is holding your brush at 45-degree angle and then brushing up and down in short strokes.
- Use a toothpaste with fluoride and curb your use of whitening pastes or tartar control products that can be too abrasive for your teeth.
- Make sure to rinse out your toothbrush thoroughly after use and let it air dry before tucking back into its case so bacteria doesn't start growing in it. (Eww!)
