10 Nasty ingredients found in food you eat every day

You assume that the foods you eat on a daily basis have passed inspection and are safe to eat. But did you know a lot of your foods have DISGUSTING hidden ingredients you didn't know about? I'm talking things that make you want to throw up your last meal and never eat again. However, we know that's not realistic, but you should at least know what goes into your food.

I'm just as bad as the next person when it comes to battling my cravings, but after learning about the unknown ingredients in our every day foods, I was shocked. Listen, ladies, if you're looking to drop a few pounds, this gallery of gross additives might just help you in that department.

Carmine

If you love strawberry or cherry flavored anything, chances are you are eating carmine. Carmine is ground up red beetles used to give the red coloring in your favorite candies, drinks, even lipstick and lip gloss!

Castoreum

If you love vanilla flavored anything, then you have come across Castoreum. In other words, you are eating the anal secretions and urine from a beaver. Gross right? Well it's in your vanilla and raspberry flavored ice-cream and candy, just to name a few.

L-Cysteine

Your favorite bread might contain L-Cysteine, as it is a key component to extending its shelf life. This ingredient is an amino acid made up of bird feathers and human hair which is used because it's cheaper to recycle than to fully dispose of them.

Titanium Dioxide

This chemical is found in sunscreen and paint can contain toxic lead. "White" foods such as coffee creamer, milk, and salad dressing have this ingredient which makes them appear whiter.

Maggots

If you sometimes opt for canned veggies as opposed to the fresh ones, you're probably eating bugs.The FDA allows 19 maggots and 74 mites per can as long as they don't ruin the quality of the food. The worst ones are found in canned mushrooms!

Ammonia

Meat factories try to keep their meat safe by spraying it with ammonia gas, aka that "pink slime" you've seen. Yes, ammonia, as in the stuff you use to clean your bathrooms. The USDA legally allows it to be used and deems it safe, but it doesn't label the food as having gone through the process. To be safe go with organic meats to avoid the poisonous gas.

Propylene Glycerol

Next time you get a prepackaged salad from your favorite fast food spot, think again. They spray their salads with Propylene glycerol which is intended to keep the greens fresh. The problem is it is also found in antifreeze and sexual lubricants. Yum.

Dimethylpolysiloxane

As Latinos we love our rice, but we have to watch out getting it from takeout spots! Sticky rice is a common food that many people eat, but what they don't know is that it contains Dimethylpolysiloxane which is a chemical found in glue and caulk!

Shellac

That same chemical that gives your manicure that shiny and chip-free look is also found in your food! The shininess you see in some candies come from shellac, crushed insect cocoons.

Collagen

When you think of collagen you usually associate it with beauty. However collagen is made from gelatin which is boiled cow, horse, and other animal bones, hides, and skins. This goes into your favorite jiggly dessert: Jell-O!
