If you're looking to shape up and are tired of doing cardio all the time, you may want to take up strength training. Initially most women panic at the idea of lifting weight because they're afraid of bulking up. Full disclaimer here: It's impossible for that to happen because we don't produce as much testosterone as men. This only happens if a woman is taking steroids and other drugs intended to make them bulk up.
So now that I've disproved that myth, you should know that you will receive many health benefits and some physical ones if you start strength training. If you want that J.Lo bod, you have to work for it just like she does!

You'll be surprised how quickly you'll start burning calories and challenging your body simply by incorporating weights. Cardio is necessary, but balancing it out with strength training will not only tighten up your body more, but help you achieve your weight loss goal much quicker.

It will accentuate your curves: Yes, ladies, you WON'T lose your curves by lifting weights. In fact you're only going to enhance them with squats, lunges, deadlifts and other exercises. All your favorite body parts are going to become are perkier, tighter, and higher … and what woman doesn't want that?!
It can help combat diabetes: Latinos have long been susceptible to getting diabetes, which can be avoided if you eat well and strength train. A study showed that Latinos who strength trained saw impressive improvement in glucose control–the equivalent to taking diabetes medication. They were also stronger, had less body fat, less depressed, and were more self-confident.
It will boost your metabolism: If you're in a weight loss rut and have a few more pounds to lose strength training may be key. Strength training boosts your metabolism and helps your body burn more calories 24/7.
It will strengthen heart and bones: Lifting weights and helps strengthen your heart when its added to aerobic activity. You'll combat osteoporosis (which affects us Latinas at higher rates!) because you'll increase bone density and prevents heart disease by making it stronger.
It can help you beat depression: Studies have shown that women who strength train feel more confident than their counterparts. One particular study done by Harvard university found that women reduced their symptoms of depression after only 10 sessions of strength training.
