There's a dangerously scary new trend among models in their attempts to lose weight. Apparently a lot of them have been eating cotton balls to feel full and suppress their appetites. This is not only the stupidest dieting trend I've ever heard of but it's incredibly hazardous and possibly even death-threatening. What is wrong with people these days?

Eddie's Murphy's 23-year-old model and actress daughter, Bria Murphy, was one of the first people to bring this extreme diet to light. In a recent interview with Good Morning America she spoke about how a lot of models in the industry have been doing this to stay skinny. "I've heard of people eating the cotton balls with the orange juice … they dip it in the orange juice and then they eat the cotton balls to help them feel full," she said. "The cotton's not doing anything. It's just dissolving. And it makes you think you're full, but you're not."
Models taking extreme measures to stay thin is definitely nothing new. In fact, I've heard of some pretty desperate attempts many have made to suppress their appetites and lose weight, such as cigarette smoking, taking cocaine, diet pills, laxatives, and even HCG injections. But none of them really compare to this crazy cotton ball thing. The health risks are very VERY serious!
Health expert and medical contributor for Fox News, Dr. Manny Alvarez went into some of the dangerous effects this ridiculous weight loss attempt could have on someone's health. "If a person successfully swallows the cotton balls, they may then face dangers including bowel obstruction, twisting of the intestines and bowel necrosis." That sounds terrible! The doctor also said that any of these conditions needed surgery. SURGERY!
Honestly, I can't even 100 percent blame these women, because a lot of it has to do with the pressures they receive from the industry. The day the fashion world finally recognizes the dangers that come with these eating disorders and finally starts to fully embrace models with healthy weights, that's when things will start to turn around. In the meantime, all we can do is try to educate and discourage the young women of this generation from falling into these troubling patterns.
