It's a pretty well-known tease to call kids who wear glasses "four eyes." Although I wear pretty high prescription contacts these days, I luckily avoided that elementary school torture because my vision didn't go bad until high school. However, I do feel their pain. Wearing glasses for a kid's nearsightedness often means him or her labeled as a nerd and mercilessly called names. However, now scientists are doing something that can reverse the course of kids' lives: they're developing a special contact lens that can actually fix nearsightedness in children!

According to MSN Now, scientists at SUNY College of Optometry in NYC have "designed special contact lenses that control the way the eye grows." This is important because nearsightedness, also known as myopia, "occurs when the eyeball is too long" and "coaxing the eye to develop in the right shape would make nearsightedness a thing of the past."

As someone who has pretty bad eyesight that's only getting worse, my only regret is that I am clearly too old to enjoy the benefits of these fancy new contacts! Maybe scientists can do something to improve the eyesight of adults, too? I guess those of us who aren't kids will have to wait and see, but I am DEFINITELTY excited about this development for my kids. If all they need to fix their eyesight is a different kind of contact lenses, then why not? I'd rather pay for more expensive contacts (at least I'm assuming they'll be pricier) than make my children wear glasses that will leave them getting teased at school. Hooray and THANKS, science!
