Does being a parent make you fat?

Although I was one of those lucky moms–don't hate me–who didn't gain a lot of extra weight during either of my pregnancies and was able to lose most of it a few months after giving birth, my body never ever looked the same. While I'm not overweight, I've never gone back to my pre-children weight and after the birth of my second child, I realized that would never happen. One of the main problems that most new moms face is the difficulty in keeping a healthy diet.

In the process of making sure our children eat the most healthiest and balanced of foods, we normally forget about ourselves and eat whatever and whenever… or, at least I do.

For example, I rarely find the time–nor do I have the appetite–to eat breakfast. My mornings always feel so rushed that only by the time lunchtime comes around is when I realized I haven't eaten anything the whole day. Same goes for finding the time to make myself something healthy, which usually means I just eat whatever I find in the fridge or the pantry and it's more often than not something unhealthy.

Well, a recent study that looked at parental eating habits has found that parents eat more saturated fat than people who don't have kids. And, in case you didn't know, a diet high in saturated fat is really bad because it can lead to high cholesterol, obesity, Type 2 diabetes and even heart attacks. How scary is that?

Besides the imortance of taking care of yourself so you can be there for your children, not having healthy eating habits can also be detrimental to them. We all know children learn from example and if they see you eating all kinds of unhealthy stuff, they'll want to do the same.

I guess the time has come for me to change my ways… for my own health and that of my two kids.
