When I got my gastric bypass done in 2009, I wasn't dealing with diabetes. I was one of the lucky ones, I guess. Most people who are morbidly obese or even overweight, in particular Latinos, have diabetes along with all the complications it brings.
At the time, though, my doctor told me that I would never likely have to deal with diabetes, something which I had heard from another friend who underwent weight loss surgery. Now there's real evidence showing that we weren't the only ones.
A new study reveals that obesity surgery can reverse the signs of diabetes, sometimes even within a few hours.

In the study that was presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology, authors said that patients who had stomach-reducing surgery saw their blood sugar levels drop to normal levels. USA Today reports the findings:

I'm not really surprised about these findings, thanks to my own experience, but I'm really glad to see this study prove what I already knew. Although weight loss surgery shouldn't be a cure for your diabetes, it's nice to know that, should you decide to do it because you are morbidly obese and can't lose weight any o ther way, it will help get rid of your diabetes as well as your excess. weight.
