Decorating for Christmas can be so much fun, but it can also be incredibly expensive. Don’t despair if you don’t already have a bunch of decorations to transform your home for the holidays, though. The truth is that you can decorate your entire home without using up your entire savings. How? By making DIY decorations that look like they cost a bundle but are actually quite inexpensive.

Decorating for the holidays can really help put you and your family in the holiday spirit. It’s so heartwarming to look around and see all the Christmas décor you have lovingly placed around your home. And when you make your own decorations, there’s something extra special about it because they were made with love and are one of a kind. Every year when you pull out the Christmas crafts you’ve made, you’ll feel a sense of love and pride, and so will your kids. Here are some great DIY Christmas crafts to inspire you this year.
These toilet paper roll stars are on point.
What I love about these star ornaments is that they are made out of something we all have at home at some point or another: empty toilet paper rolls. Making them is easy, and you could even omit the paint and little decorative bead to make the project even easier.
Here’s another version of the stars.
These are painted and glued on to skewers to create a lovely “Merry Christmas” display that could go on your mantel or be a centerpiece for your table. So, so clever. You can use empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls to make them.
More stars, different technique.
These beautiful stars look complex and hard to make, but they are not. They can be used to create a wreath or as table décor or even as tree ornaments. You will need some cardstock or lightweight cardboard and glue to make them.
Make a professional-looking centerpiece.
I love that you can make this yourself, but it looks like you may have bought it from a florist. Remember that you can use whatever type of flowers, so don’t forget that poinsettias are an option.
Watch this floating candle tutorial all the way through.
At first it looks like it it’s going to be meh, then she pours in some water and it is like WOW. So beautiful. You could do a version of these for every holiday just by swapping out what you add to the mix.
How is this infinite candle even possible?
Perhaps it’s a Christmas miracle, but more likely it’s just the product of being very clever. Using cooking oil to create a candle that keeps on going is nothing short of a stroke of brilliance that produces a beautifully brilliant candlelight.
This Mason jar Christmas candleholder craft is so picturesque.
You can recreate the holiday scenes this creator made inside of Mason jars or come up with your own using decorations you already have. Regardless, using decorated Mason jars as candlestands is a great idea.
Use a pool noodle to make a festive wreath.
There is no way that you would look at this stunning wreath and think that the form for it was made out of a pool noodle. The finished product is a delight, and you can use ornaments you already have.
You can make giant candies for your tree.
Head over to your nearest dollar store and find a festive disposable red dish that you can fashion into a giant peppermint candy for your tree with the help of white duct tape and cellophane. So cute and sweet!
Turn any white door in your home into a snowperson.
This is such a good idea, especially since most of us have white doors in our homes. You can show your child this video and let them create the snowperson on the door themselves. If you have more than one kid and more than one door available, let them make their own and celebrate their uniqueness.
Why should trees get all the ornaments?
As you can see, a floating ornament wall display is gorgeous. Fishing line makes it so that you can hang ornaments on any wall and create a floating effect. This would also make for a great photo backdrop that your family and any guests can use to commemorate the season in pictures.
Use disposable dusters to make a fluffy wreath.
I kind of like the fluffy wreaths made out of dusters without any other decorations, but you can add whatever you like to them. It’s hard to believe that a duster could look so dang pretty wrapped around a foam wreath frame.
Drink wine, then decorate the empty wine bottles.
You can make an elfish bottle or a Santa-inspired bottle. Let your imagination go wild and have fun turning empty wine bottles into light-filled decorations that you can put on your mantel or around the house for added holiday spirit.
Cook up a citrus garland.
These orange garlands are so pretty and popular. They look beautiful hung on their own or added to your tree or other decorations around your home. Have your kids help you string them and pick where to hang them.
Make pine cone Christmas trees.
I absolutely adore this idea of turning pine cones into mini Christmas trees by gluing small decorative spheres on them and then using a piece of wood as the trunk/stand. You could decorate them with all kinds of things.
