Plan to paint. Painting a room is one of the easiest and most affordable way to change the look of it. If you're into neutrals, go ahead and get it done right away, but if you're a color lover, start collecting some ideas, but wait to make a final decision until you've picked out furniture and accessories.
Add an area rug. Throwing an area rug under your bed will instantly make your room feel cozier. Whether you have hardwood floors or wall-to-wall carpeting, it's also a great way to add some color and texture, and there are lots and lots of options available for just a few hundred dollars or less. For the most impact, buy the biggest rug you can afford that will still fit in your space.
Freshen your linens. New linens can be pricey, but will make a huge difference in the overall appearance and feel of your room. Shop for sheets and window treatments on clearance, and consider purchasing a few pretty patterned duvet covers rather than replacing your comforter.
Install a new light fixture. Light fixtures can add a lot of personality to a room. Whether you choose a dramatic pendant or a couple of sturdy bedside lamps, it'll be an effective, functional and attractive upgrade to builder-grade fixtures.
Bring in some life. Live plants or a weekly fresh flower bouquet can add a pop of color in addition to keeping the air in your room fresh and clean. Plus, they're just nice to look at which will make the atmosphere more pleasant. If you don't have a green thumb, you can even opt for small artificial plants, which can look very realistic.
