Think Big: You can create that illusion of "big" space in your living room by moving furniture out of the way, adding an extra-large area rug, mirrors on the wall and emptying your bookshelves. Less is almost always more when it comes to decorating!

Focal Point: Now that you rearranged your furniture and tossed some pieces, you need to create a focal point. Decorators love that word! It can be anything, a piece of art, a couch, a table, even a plant. Really anything, but be careful because that will be the theme of the room. Make sure you have a clear concept and that everything else in the room plays to that focus so that it feels "put together".

Create Drama: Nothing screams more drama than color. Pick a pallet and stick to it! Make sure you don't change your mind later because we are not only talking about paint or wall paper but accents as well. Use one color that really pops and concentrate it, for example, choose one wall, one bookshelf or the entry way to make the effect work.

Create Light: You can instantly add light to a dark apartment by painting the walls with light colors and adding lamps strategically around the room. If your source of light only comes from one little window, then make it the focal point. You can dress up the window like a piece of art by adding painting lights beneath it. The light from the lamps will bounce the natural light and spread it through the room.

Art: A lot of people don't pay attention to their walls and if they do they fill them with family pictures. In a million dollar home, the walls are for hanging art. Empty your walls and put one photo, art piece or a big clock to get that instant upscale look. Remember, you don't have to spend a million bucks, especially not with all the large scale printers we all have access to now. Take a gorgeous photo from vacation or even of your pet, add some cool filters or play around with it in Photoshop and you'll have a piece of pop art you'll be proud of in no time to hang on your living room wall.
