Whether you spend all day in your home or arrive sometime in the evening ready to crash, home is a place we all rely on for comfort. But sometimes hectic schedules and higher priorities can keep us from making our homes into the havens we dream of. The thing is, it doesn't have to take a lot of effort (or money) to make your home a peaceful place that brings you joy and satisfaction–and that goes for every type of home, from teensy studios to massive McMansions. Here are seven things you can do to make your home a happier place to be:

Make your bed. I will admit that I didn't make this a habit until very recently, but now, the day just doesn't feel right until the bed is made. And if I manage to make it in the morning, even if I get nothing else done, I can say at least something is in order.
Get rid of things you don't love. Purge, purge, purge. I'm a huge fan of periodically going through your stuff and getting rid of things that you no longer like or just feel lukewarm about. Not only does it serve to declutter, but it leaves more clear space for the things you truly love. Eventually, your goal should be to love everything you own, so that you no longer find yourself wishing for something better.
Light a nice candle. I'm not talking dollar store goods here. Buy something a little nicer in a scent that makes you smile. Scent can easily transport us to certain places and times, so find one that brings back happy memories. And remember, a good quality candle lasts a long time and can be healthier for your family to breathe in.
Hang some artwork. This can be pictures of your family, an inexpensive print, a page from a magazine or a signed original from a local artist, as long as it is special to you. Try hanging something that pleases your eye in every room in the house. And don't forget to look at it whenever you need a mood booster!
Buy fresh flowers. Fresh flowers are an amazing way to bring life and color into your home. They don't have to be expensive, but be sure to purchase something that you have an emotional reaction to. Tip: instead of a mixed bouquet, try buying several stems of one type of flower. This is a great way to make standard varieties appear chic and trendy.
Display meaningful items. Family heirlooms, memoirs from important relationships, etc. are all things that make me feel comfortable in my home and bring me joy. I keep an afghan crocheted by my abuela on my bed, treasured photo albums on the bookshelf and small gifts from my husband scattered about.
Don't forget thebathroom. I don't know about you, but soft, fluffy towels and delicious smelling soap make a huge difference in my relaxation level. Invest a little in your bathroom wares, to make your bathing and grooming experience a more pleasant one, and it's sure to lift your mood.
