6 Ways to make your home a sanctuary from the madness (PHOTOS)

People who say your home should be your sanctuary really have a lot of time because they probably don't work and most definitely don't have kids, pets, relatives, and a husband who's less than willing to put away his clothes and shoes in their place. There's no doubt that your house should be your place of refuge from the madness that we experience each day … but who has time to rest? Maybe those people who live alone or have maids. Find a super comfy couch

It could be a couch or a cushy chair, a rocking chair, or if you have the space, a hammock. The important thing is that you have a space that isn't your bed where you can feel at peace and where you can relax after you come home of after the kids go to bed. Chill out in your space with a cup of herbal tea or a glass of wine. Even if you only use this refuge for 10 minutes a day, they'll be worth it.

Surround yourself with nature

Not all if us want to or are able to live in the countryside–and many of us don't have a yard or an outdoor are to enjoy daily. However, having palnts in your house will go a long way in helping to make you feel relaxed. In my own house, my family thinks I'm crazy when they see me talking to my plants, but even just that time spent pruning and taking care of them makes me feel at peace.

Use relaxing sounds

Noise can produce a lot of stress without us even reaizing it. Few of us have the privilege of living near the sea; the sound of the ocean is one of the most relaxing in the world. But you don't have to live oceanside to enjoy it, when a small electrical fountain that you can put anywhere in your home can do the trick. It can even help babies sleep better!

Let aromatherapy help

Find a fragrance that you like; my favorite is lavender. You can use aromatherapy oils or scented candles in your favorite scent to set the mood throughout your house. My sons are still young, so I don't normally use candles, but oils heated in special aromatherapy heat lamps do the trick every time.

Use photography

I keep photos of favorite panoramas right in front of my bed. When I can't fall asleep, I look at that image of my favorite beach during one of my most special vacations and the other one of my chlidhood home. They bring me instant calm.
