Domino’s new gluten-free pizza is good for Latinos (EXCLUSIVE)

Let's be honest here. What do you do on days that you come home from work too tired to cook and you don't feel like heating up some leftovers? I think a lot of people would answer by saying that they order a pizza. I know I certainly do. But after a friend of mine was diagnosed with Celiac disease (an intestinal gluten intolerance) a month ago, it forced me to reevaluate a few things in my own diet. As I did research with her about what foods contain gluten, I not only found out that gluten is in practically everything but also that you don't have to have Celiac to be intolerant to gluten. Many people actually suffer from a sensitivity to gluten and probably don't even know it. So what do you do when you're wanting to order that pizza but aren't sure you want to expose your family to gluten? Well, now you can head to Domino's! They have partnered with the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness to become the first national pizza delivery chain to offer a gluten-free crust.

I was lucky enough to try the new pizza, exclusively for Mamás Latinas, and am happy to say that it is really, really delicious. It may not technically be Latin food but, on days that I'm too lazy or tired to do anything else (or, let's face it, really just craving a pizza), I'm glad to have a gluten-free option to share with my whole family. And they loved the pizza too! It's thin crust, which I love, and the only difference I found is that it's not as crunchy as the typical crust. But that doesn't mean it's any less delicious. In fact, some of my family liked this new crust much better.

Since an estimated 18 million Americans are sensitive to gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye and barley), according to Alice Bast of the NFCA,  this Domino's partnership is great news. Domino's Pizza president and CEO, J. Patrick Doyle, explains why they came up with the new pizza:

Many of our customers have asked for a gluten free crust, and Domino's is excited to offer a product to customers with mild gluten sensitivity – as well as partner with the NFCA, which has been instrumental to our learning more about how to take this step. The prevalence of gluten sensitivity has become a real issue with significant impact on consumer choice, and we want to be a part of the solution. Now, the whole group can enjoy Domino's with the addition of our new Gluten Free Crust.

Although the pizzas are meant for people with a gluten sensitivity and NOT those with full-on Celiac disease, it's still a big win for anyone that is weary of gluten for health reasons. But I do know one thing for sure: better awareness of gluten is good for Latinos because it can help those of us who suffer figure out how to help ourselves. And if a gluten-free pizza is part of the equation, then that's not too bad either. I'm definitely looking forward to sharing it—along with Latin gluten-free favorites—with my whole family.
