More gross food news: kid’s lunch school burgers and airplane snacks not safe

I don't know how to tell you this. I honestly can't believe that I am reading about another gross food news story. Seriously, what has been going on lately?!

From finding out about pink slime and how the ammonia-treated beef trimmings are being served in schools, all of the weird food available at fast food restaurants and the fact that feces and antidepressants can be found in your grocery store chicken, the bad news just keeps on coming. The latest is by far the worst, though. A report by NPR has found that there are 26 ingredients in your kid's school lunch burger and only ONE is actual meat. Plus, another story revealed that there are maggots in airplane snack packs.

There are just no words to describe how disgusted I am by all of this.

First off, NPR did a study on school lunch burgers and found that there are 26 ingredients but only one of them sounds like something kids should actually be eating (you know, the actual meat). The other ingredients include thiamine mononitrate, disodium inosinate, pyridoxine hydrochloride and more. What are these ingredients? I've no idea! But I don't think I want them anywhere near a child's mouth.

Then, as if feces in your chicken weren't enough, now we're finding maggots in airline trail mix. A woman on a flight to Australia found the disgusting critters in her trail mix snack—and in the snacks of her 15-year-old son. She describes how she made the discovery:

I felt like hair or something over my mouth. When I turned the light on and looked down I saw white stringy bits. Then I saw maggots crawling inside the pack.

All of this bad news is almost enough to make me give up eating all together! I don't think I'll ever look at most food the same again, especially not airplane snacks. I just can't believe how much food is getting contaminated with who-knows-what these days. I, for one, am growing increasingly frustrated with it all—and I don't know what to do. For now, I'll just keep a close watch on my food.

What do you make of this latest news about maggots in airplane snacks and way-too-many-weird-ingredients in school lunch burgers?
