Redecorating made easy! The cheapest way to update your home

I'm a perpetual hair-color changer. I don't know why, but I've always loved dying my hair all sorts of different shades. I've gone from dark brown to red to chocolate brown to highlights and back again. What does this have to do with home redecorating exactly? Well, one of the main reasons I love coloring my hair is that I once heard the phrase "the easiest way to change your wardrobe is to change your hair color". And it's so true! Going from brown to red is dramatic and it makes everything I wear look different. That favorite green dress has a different effect depending on my hair color. Well, the absolute same can go for your home! If you want to throw out all of your furniture and redecorate the house, here's a tip: save money by repainting all of your walls instead. It's the quickest way to freshen up every room in the house.

Taking a room from one shade to another can change your entire home's look dramatically. There are a few different ways to go about it. Here are the best ways to use paint to update your home's look:

1. Go from one shade to another: If your living room is painted cream, why not go for a similar color but in a darker shade? Repaint it a dark café con leche for a much more dramatic look. This can be done in reverse, as well. Take that dark blue bathroom to a baby blue. The advantage of this technique is that the walls will still look great with the furniture and decorations you picked out, but will give them a renewed look.

2. Change to a complimentary color: Have you seen the color wheel lately? There's a reason why some colors just look good together (red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple). They are directly opposite each other, which means they complement each other. If your bedroom decorations are all in deep shades of eggplant, paint your walls a light yellow. Or if everything is lavender, go for a mustard color and just watch your bedroom transform into a whole new room.

3. Play with a new paint pattern: One great thing about painting is that you don't have to stick to just one color. My mom decorated our Florida home by painting one wall lemon yellow, one wall ocean blue, one wall mint green and one wall salmon orange. It sounded insane but it looked great. You can try different walls in different colors or try a paint technique like horizontal stripes or adding texture to the walls (like with Venetian plaster). Don't be afraid to experiment with patterns!

When it comes to repainting your home, the point is that you have plenty of options for how to make it work. Whether you choose to paint one room or all of them, you can trust that changing the color of the walls will make you see everything else differently, too. Furniture will look newer and decorations will pop in a different way. Don't be afraid to experiment a little, too. After all, you can change it all back with just another coat of paint.
