The first Monday of May is a big deal for the fashion world. It’s when the yearly Met Gala—referred to as "fashion’s biggest night out"—is held. In 2024, that night fell on May 6 and celebrated the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion." The dress code for the event was "The Garden of Time" and celebrity guests showed up dressed in magnificent interpretations of the theme.
More from MamásLatinas: Kim Kardashian's most memorable bikini moments
I genuinely can’t say that there were any worst dressed celebrities on the red carpet because the Met Gala is about creativity, expression, and art through fashion. Everyone delivered in their own way. What I can say is that some of the looks were more eye-catching than others. Check out the ones that caught my eye!
Kendall Jenner in vintage Givenchy Haute Couture.
Is it me or is Kendall’s look giving Disney villain? I mean it in a good way and it goes well with the Met's Sleeping Beauties exhibit. I like the way the design makes the peekaboo portion around above her hips look like a low-slung belt of sorts.
Nicole Kidman in Balenciaga.
“The Met Gala’s ‘The Garden of Time’ theme is so beautiful, I think I just fell in love with the idea of kissing a Balenciaga couture gown awake,” Nicole told Vogue of the dress the Balenciaga dress she chose for the event. It’s actually a recreation of a flamenco-inspired dress from the design house’s spring 1951 collection.
Demi Lovato in Prabal Gurung Atelier.
This year marks Demi’s first return to the Met Gala after her 2016 debut at the event. Her dazzling dress was embellished with shimmering floral appliques that were an obvious nod to the event’s dress code.
Shakira in Carolina Herrera.
“It's really about making Shakira feel like the best version of Shakira,” Carolina Herrera creative director Wes Gordon told Vogue about look he created for the singer. The cape was designed to look like a rose.
Nicki Minaj in Marni.
Nicki Minaj looked like the embodiment of a sunny day in the garden. Her dress was fun and whimsical. The flowers all seemed to be joyfully blooming and popping playfully off the garment.
Lizzo in Weinsanto.
Paris-based designer Victor Weinsanto had the fabric of the dress Lizzo wore dyed to match her skin tone. It took over 600 hours to create the dress and the results are nothing short of wearable art.
Zendaya in Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano.
Standing ovation for Zendaya in this peacock-inspired dress. This look is giving drama. The colors, the design, the embellishments, her makeup, her hair, that feather in the air, it’s all drama and it deserves a round of applause.
Zendaya again, but this time in Givenchy Haute Couture.
Apparently, Zendaya was not satisfied with serving up just one exquisite look. She came back and delivered seconds in a 1996 John Galliano Givenchy gown topped with a full-on bouquet of flowers fascinator. Iconic!
Cardi B in Giambattista Valli.
Cardi's dress was an event unto itself. It took up the entire red carpet—the carpet was actually green, but you get the point—and it took more than five handlers to maneuver the enormous train.
Eiza González in Del Core.
The Mexican actress's dress is simple yet evocative. The pale pink and ivory dress is light and airy. It’s giving Venus emerging from a tulip instead of a seashell. Eiza looks divine, for sure.
Demi Moore in Harris Reed.
Wow! Demi’s stunning custom gown was something to behold. It was made out of vintage archived wallpaper, of all things. Here’s how Vogue describes the dress:
“The velvet dress features a double Duchess silk panel adorned with massive pink peonies procured from dead stock wallpaper. Reed designed the dress so that it would begin to decay as it traveled down Moore’s body, the wilting flowers made of hand-painted silk organza.”
Karol G in Marc Jacobs.
Karol G leaned heavy into fairycore for her look. Her dress, her hair, and even her prosthetic ears were elf-inspired. She told Vogue that the gala “was the perfect opportunity for me to express how I love fairies and dreamy vibes and fantasy.”
Jennifer Lopez in Schiaparelli Haute Couture.
J.Lo's nearly nude dress was embellished with 2.5 million beads and took over 800 hours to make. The dress is incredible and Jen let it shine by keeping her hair and makeup simple and unfussy.
Bad Bunny in Maison Margiela.
Benito Martínez Ocasio, aka Bad Bunny, one of the cochairs of the gala, wore the heck out of what I would call a romantic marching band poet ensemble. His navy, red, and white suit was custom made by Maison Margiela.
Colman Domingo in Willy Chavarria.
I am such a fan of Colman Domingo. I love his work and I adore his sense of style. The man can act and the man can dress! His look included a white cape to honor two departed Black icons: actor Chadwick Boseman and journalist André Leon Talley. "They both wore capes when they were at the Met," Colman told Live From E!. "Everything I do, I feel like it's gotta be for the culture. It's gotta be more than just for me."
Kylie Jenner in Oscar de la Renta.
Kylie's elegant satin gown was inspired by J. G. Ballard’s short story, "The Garden of Time," which was the inspiration for the event's dress code. Her dress was meant to evoke a garden statue.
Kim Kardashian in Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano.
Kim Kardashian wore a custom Maison Margiela design, which included a bustier and a floral chainmail dress paired with a rather casual looking cardigan that some fans think was a mistake and something she threw on last minute. But, nope, the cardigan is intentional.
Sarah Jessica Parker in Richard Quinn.
The second I saw Sarah in her Met look, I thought it was inspired by a bird cage. A very elegant birdcage, but a birdcage nonetheless. “Hand-cut lace is appliquéd over the frame, appearing to grow around it and adding a subtle floral element to the design,” designer Richard Quinn told Vogue.
Janelle Monáe in Vera Wang.
Janelle Monáe always delivers exceptional red carpet looks. Her Vera Wang gown, made up of large circular holographic sequins, seemed to float around her body.
Mindy Kaling in Gaurav Gupta Couture.
“The name of this dress is ‘The Melting Flower of Time’…it shows a bud and a blossoming flower that is now wilting,” Mindy said of her dress. The dress really did seem to be beautifully melting her.
Génesis Suero dressed to impress.
Reporting from the red carpet for the second time on behalf of Telemundo, Génesis Suero dressed on theme. Her elegant dress incorporated intricate floral designs and a timepiece.
