The 2023 Golden Globes Awards ceremony took place on Tuesday, January 10, in rain-soaked Hollywood. The ceremony returned after a one-year hiatus due to complaints of lack of diversity. In 2021, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which runs the Golden Globes, was called out for not adding any Black correspondents since 2002. The HFPA made some changes and affirms that it “remains committed to important changes and supporting programs that prioritize diversity, inclusion, and transparency.” We’ll see, but for now let’s talk about the best and worst dressed celebrities who attended this year’s ceremony.

Fashion and my opinions on it, unlike the need for diversity and representation, are not really all that important, so let’s keep that in mind. Whenever I read a list or write a list like this one, I like to remind myself that it’s all in fun. Fashion should be fun and what appeals to me may not appeal to you. It’s not that heavy. Still, I have opinions and so do you, so let’s go through who I think were the best and worst dressed celebs at the 2023 Golden Globes.
Hilary Swank and her baby bump looked lovely.
Pregnant with twins, the Alaska Daily star owned the red carpet in a dark green gown by Prada. What is there not to like about this look? First of all, any dress with pockets is a winner in my book—and Hilary looks spectacular.
Tyler James in Amiri? YES!
OK, not only did he win a Golden Globe for her performance on Abbott Elementary, he showed up in a winning outfit. I’m not exaggerating when I say that seeing him in this ombre pinstriped suit by Amiri makes me feel all kinds of emotional in a good way. He looks suave and oh so confident. I love it!
Michelle Yeoh wore the heck out of Armani.
Her midnight blue tiered gown by Armani Privé sparkled exquisitely and made Michelle look like a glimmering goddess. She took home a Golden Globe for her performance in the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Emma D'Arcy wore an unforgettable suit by Acne Studios.
Emma D'Arcy wore a rather polarizing outfit. Some people love it, some people hate it. I love it and let me tell you why? Would I wear it? Nope, but that's why I love it on Emma. “I’m wearing a skirt and trousers, because nothing says ‘nonbinary’ like wearing trousers and a skirt simultaneously,” Emma who identifies as nonbinary told Vogue. I love this outfit on Emma because fashion should be about the wearer and not about trends.
Selena Gomez wore Valentino Haute Couture.
This is one of the evenings outfits that has made both "best" and "worst" dressed lists. For me this is a best. I like that the dress looks like it's black velvet, but on further inspection it's really a deep eggplant-y purple. As for the sleeve, I'm all for bold.
Jenna Ortega wore Gucci.
Since playing Wednesday Addams, Jenna Ortega has been wearing a whole lot of black and while I love her goth looks, it's refreshing that she showed up to the Golden Globes wearing a flowy, blush-colored, Gucci dress with cut-outs. Not what most expected to see her in.
Jessica Chastain wore Oscar de la Renta.
Oh, my goddess! Jessica in this dress! Who wouldn't want to get caught up in the web of glamour that is this dress by Oscar de la Renta. The dress itself is wow and the way it looks on Jessica is like wow wow! Perfection.
Salma Hayek wore Gucci.
The Gucci dress that Salma Hayek wore kind of sort of reminds me of the Oscar de la Renta dress that Jessica Chastain wore because of the colors and kind of webbed overlay. I like the contrast of the black straps.
Colman Domingo wore Dolce & Gabbana.
The Fear of the Walking Dead actor was nothing short of dashing in his double-breasted bejeweled Dolce & Gabbana tux. He wore all black, but was not afraid to shimmer and shine.
Angela Bassett wore Pamella Roland.
She's a star and she is not afraid to shine like one in a halter-neck silver gown by Pamella Roland. She went home with a Golden Globe for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Ana de Armas wore Louis Vuitton.
The Blonde star is featured on many “best dressed” lists because of the Louis Vuitton dress that she wore to the awards ceremony, but I don’t love it and let me tell you why. The dress and shape are fine, but that panel in the front with all the sparking studded stuff looks like a table runner to me.
Heidi Klum wore Germanier.
It's not that I think Heidi Klum looks bad in this dress. She doesn't. She's actually radiant. It's just that I think it is better suited to an ice skating competition or an appearance on Dancing With the Stars.
Liza Koshy wore Morphew Atelier.
I like the lace dress that Liza Koshy wore from the front, but I really don't like it from the back. It's not that I'm a prude or opposed to seeing exposed skin, it's just that I don't really like chonies sticking out of gowns. For me, this look becomes all about the thong and I think that's just wrong.
Eddie Redmayne wore Valentino.
The Good Nurse actor wore an inoffensive if rather unremarkable tux by Valentino over a mesh shirt. If that's all he had worn, I probably wouldn't have looked at his outfit twice, but the tux was adorned with an absurdly large satin flower that made me question its why? Like, why? Was there fabric left over that the designer didn't know what to do with and so they fashioned an atrocious flower out of it?
Lisa Ann Walter wore gray on gray.
I love Lisa Ann Walter on Abbott Elementary and it pains me to say anything bad about what she wore because she looks genuinely happy in her outfit, but for me it's just too much and not enough. Too much gray, too many bows, and that shrug thing makes me shrug in confusion.
Gigi Paris wore a sheer number.
I like the bodice of the dress that the model wore. I like the color. It's the sheerness of the skirt that doesn't do it for me. Somehow it doesn't look like it's on purpose. It looks unfinished and not risqué, just like something is missing.
Seth Rogen wore a peachy tux.
OK, this was hard for me because I feel like I have a love-hate relationship with the tux that Seth Rogen wore. First of all, I love the that he chose that peachy color to wear. What I don't love is that somehow it looks like a cheap rental tux from the '70s, like they ran out of the light blue polyester one and Seth had to settle for this one without a ruffled shirt.
Britt Lower wore Bach Mai.
The Severance star wore a dress that I would have loved to wear to my prom. It's everything that my angsty teenage self would have found edgy. And I most definitely would have paired it with those gloves as well. I don't hate the dress, I just think it would have been better at a prom in the late '80s, early '90s.
Jenny Slate wore Rodarte.
There's nothing really wrong with Jenny Slate's dress. It's cute, she's cute, and she looks good in it. It just looks more like something you would wear to a garden party or wedding than an awards show.
Davis Burleson went for whacky.
The What's Poppin? With Davis!! host wore a fun/funny sequin suit and while I think there is nothing wrong in displaying your sense of humor with your attire, this look just doesn't do it for me.
