We have loved Stephen Knoll's hair care line, Stephen Knoll New York, for years. And now, the famous celebrity hairstylist has made his exclusive line of premium, customizable styling and hair care products available to consumers nationwide. We asked him to share some of the most common mistakes women make in their hair care routines, as well as his best tips for a beautiful, healthy mane.
Stephen founded his New York City salon in the heart of Manhattan in 1991 and until recently, his hair care line was only available to US customers in the salon. “I have had an incredible response from clients at the salon, they all love the products. They all have their favorite ones, and they all have the ones they can't live without,” says Stephen. “At this moment, I just feel so passionately as they are superior and different from what’s currently available in the world of hair care. It's my honor and duty to bring the line to the US so that everyone can experience the products.”

As for where the inspiration for product development comes from, Stephen says, “Well, it's a combination of myself, a great team of people that work with me at the salon, plus the expertise and knowledge of working alongside KOSÉ in Japan, who conduct global research and development studies of what is trending at the moment. It's a combination of all of those things—that's how we come up with the products and decide which we feel are necessary to add for our clients’ needs, and for what the market demands.” And now for the most common hair care routine mistakes that Stephen sees and his best tips!
What are the most common mistakes you see women make in their hair care routines?
One of the most common mistakes is that I see women—when they're out of the shower— combing through their hair from the scalp to the ends, which is the worst thing you can do because you create tangles and knots. You should always start from the ends and work your way up to the scalp.
The second thing I would say is over-drying your hair. People tend to over blow-dry their hair. It's unnecessary, it's damaging and drying. And when I say over dry, I mean you're drying your hair too many times by going over and over it multiple times. It takes the body and the vitality out of the hair.
Overuse of products is another common mistake. Using too many products can very often weigh the hair down.
Lack of routine: It's important to have a maintenance routine for your hair, your color, your cut, and your conditioning. People tend to neglect their hair as if it doesn't matter how they treat it. Yes, it will continue to grow but it's not going to continue to grow in the same way.
What are your top 5 most important hair care tips every woman should follow?
1. Out of the shower, use a comb or a brush starting from the ends and working your way up so that you're not tangling and creating more knots.
2. Having a hair care routine, so whether that's cut, conditioning, or coloring, it's very important to have a routine with your hair to keep your hair in well—condition.
3. Rinsing hair thoroughly after shampooing and conditioning. It's essential that you rinse all of the products out completely.
4. Women with curly hair tend to over-dry their hair, especially when they want to wear it natural. The less you dry and the more you put in product when hair is wet, you'll get the best result.
5. Using the dryer in tandem with your hairbrush so that it's moving through the hair quickly.
What are your best tips for preventing or treating split ends?
- Have your hair trimmed every five to six weeks, even if you're letting your hair grow because your hair typically grows a half-inch a month but you continue to get split ends. Taking off a millimeter at the ends prevents it from splitting.
- It's important to use oil. We have the Ultra Shine Treatment Oil to put on your ends before you blow-dry or even if you don't blow dry. It moisturizes the ends and polishes them to a smooth finish. It protects the hair from drying and splitting. You can also use the Concentrated Hair Serum.
- Avoid using brushes that do not flow through your hair easily.
- One very bad habit is when we pull the hair in a ponytail in the same place or wrap it in the same way. That very often breaks the hair. It's really important to alternate where you place your hair, whether it's a ponytail or for exercising. Change it up.
- Always remove your hair from your shoulder before putting your handbag strap onto the shoulder. This seems like such a simple thing, but it does break the hair.
What celebrity would you say has 'perfect hair' and why?
I would say, Kaia Gerber. Kaia has a very good amount of hair. She has a slight wave to her hair so that it's easy to manage a variety of styles. The other thing is that she, very much like her mother, takes her business, her professional side of her business, seriously, which includes taking care of and maintaining the health of her hair.
I often provide Kaia with travel shampoos because she is concerned about the health of her hair. Maintaining the condition of her hair is essential, not only for her business, but also for any woman, because it's the one accessory that you never leave home without!
What is your favorite product from your line?
It seems impossible to say just one. However, I do love the Style Memory Lotion because it's the one styling tool that you need to style your hair. On the other hand, the Concentrated Hair Serum is the ultimate product to protect your hair on a daily basis. So, maybe it's those two: the Style Memory Lotion and the Concentrated Hair Serum.
