While some celebs adhered to this year's "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic" theme with religious-inspired ensembles, others opted for more subtle outfits.

The Met Gala red carpet is the one place where stars can go all out and wear over-the-top outfits, and where designers can let their creativity run wild. Katy Perry, for example, made an entrance with massive feather wings, while Cardi B made her Met Gala debut in a showstopping ensemble complete with a headpiece.

Jennifer Lopez's dress featured a huge cross on the bodice.
J.Lo looked very sexy as she showed off her toned legs in a showstopping embroidered Balmain dress, which featured a long train, a red and blue cross on the bodice, and a mega-high slit.
Kim Kardashian looked like a true golden goddess.
The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star showed off her amazing curves in a figure-hugging gold Atelier Versace dress with cross detailing.
Cardi B showed off her baby bump in a bejeweled gown.
The rapper made her Met Gala debut in an intricately embroidered Moschino gown, with matching choker and massive headpiece. Her dress featured a billowing silk train attached to the waist, which added some more drama to her over-the-top look.

Move over, Victoria's Secret angels! The singer commanded all the attention in a gold Versace minidress and matching boots, complete with enormous feathered wings.
Madonna went as an immaculate goth queen.
The singer wore Jean Paul Gaultier and was styled by Eyob Yohannes, who described her look as immaculate goth queen.
"The religious theme most certainly played into the look, however we wanted to put a twist on it so we decided to make it all black," Yohannes told People. “Madonna has always woven in religion and spirituality into her music and image throughout her career. This [year's] theme could not have better suited her.”
Salma Hayek's dress depicted the biblical Garden of Eden.
The Mexican actress opted for a custom Altuzarra sequin-embroidered dress.
Lana Del Ray wore one of the most dramatic looks of the night.
The singer went as Our Lady of Sorrows in an ethereal, cream-colored dress with gold accents, featuring a jeweled sacred heart chest plate with seven daggers stuck in it. A blue headpiece with wings completed her look.
Blake Lively was a favorite with this impressive gown.
The actress went for a medieval look and wowed in a ruby Versace dress with gold accents, intricate beading, and a dramatic train. She topped off her look with a spiked headpiece that looked like a halo.
Sarah Jessica Parker was the Queen of Hearts of the carpet.

George Clooney's wife cohosted this gala and made a powerful statement by wearing pants. Her Richard Quinn ensemble featured trouser pants with an overskirt and train in a combined metallic silver and bold floral pattern.
Rihanna stunned in this pope-inspired look.
Ri-Ri wore a beaded white Maison Margiela corset minidress, which featured a full overskirt. The "Love on the Brain" singer topped off her look with a beaded bishop’s hat and accessorized it with a pearl anklet and a bejeweled crucifix necklace.

Kendall Jenner embodied the "purity and delicacy of a modern angel."
The model designed this jumpsuit alongside close friend Virgil Abloh, creative director for Off-White. According to a press release sent by the brand, Kendall was "reminiscent of an angelic cloud sought to signify Roman Catholicism in renaissance art–embodying purity and delicacy of a modern angel."
