If there's one place where celebs actually get away with over-the-top red-carpet fashion, it's the Met Gala. And last night's was no exception. With the dress code being avant-garde, you better believe our favorite stars brought their style A-Game to the forefront. From Rihanna's dress full of brightly colored panels and patterned fabric, to J.Lo's stunning light blue Valentino gown, here's a look at some of the best and worst looks of the night.

Jennifer Lopez surprised us.

She showed up in a stunning light blue Valentino gown that didn't show a tiny bit of skin. We definitely didn't see this one coming.
Salma Hayek channeled an edgier side of herself.

She rocked a black Balenciaga dress with electric blue pants that also functioned as shoes. Funky but cool!
Selena Gomez was flawless.

She looked like a goddess pairing her new sleek lob with a stunning Stuart Vevers-designed Coach gown. It brought out a whole new side of her.
Thalía showed a whole lot of leg.

She basically wore what we expected J.Lo to wear and looked stunning as usual.
Giselle Bündchen showed off her back.

The Brazilian supermodel turned heads in an open-back Stella McCartney gown paired with bronzed skin and a flirty high ponytail.
Katy Perry looked like living artwork.

Leave it to Katy to show up in the most daring dress of the night. She rocked a custom John Galliano-designed crimson wool coat over a tulle and chiffon gown that was covered in sparkles and perfectly captured the evening’s theme. The transparent veil and shining headdress was everything.
Kylie Jenner went all out.

Kylie wore a stunning sheer Versace dress that was embellished with jewels and paired with a platinum blonde bob wig. It sort of reminded me of Beyonce’s naked-inspired 2015 Met Gala dress. Remember that?
Kendall Jenner was practically naked.

The reality star and high-fashion model hit the red carpet in a sheer and backless La Perla Couture number that showed everything from legs, back and even her lace thong!
Rihanna shut it down.

Let’s be honest here, if anyone was going to named best dressed at this year’s Met Gala, it was RiRi. This year was all about honoring and celebrating the Costume Institute exhibition Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art of the In-Between, so of course she showed up in a Comme des Garcons look filled with floral fabrics. It was as sculptural and avant-garde as it could get.
Kim Kardashian kept it a bit too basic.

I don't know if Kim was trying to play it safe or really trying to prove to the world that she really isn't a flashy, materialistic person anymore, but that minimalist, white off-the-shoulder dress by Vivienne Westwood looked like the kind of dress you'd wear out to dinner on a beach vacation. I want to know what she was thinking.
Madonna's dress was so extra.

She dressed in a camouflage Moschino dressed that made her look like she was about to go into combat.
Adriana Lima’s dress had the highest slit ever.

You could practically see her crotch.
Serena Williams looked like a goddess.

She made her first red carpet maternity moment since announcing her pregnancy and looked absolutely divine. Serena, who is expecting a baby with fiancé Alexis Ohanian, was glowing in an emerald green Atelier Versace dress that complemented her beautiful complexion and hugged her new curves in all the right places.
Solange Knowles really wore a puffer jacket.

There's edgy and there's straight up lazy. When it comes to fashion, I'm usually team Solange, but what was this?
La La Anthony is fierce.

La La Anthony’s gorgeous Thai Nguyen Atelier sheer black gown sent a very clear message: "Boy, bye!" A month after reports of her shocking split with Knicks player Carmelo Anthony, La La looked fiercer than ever. Did I mention she wasn’t wearing her wedding ring?
