How to recreate Selena Quintanilla’s most iconic lip looks

Selena Quintanilla was known for a lot of things, though namely her music and the inspiring way she represented Latinos in the '90s. She was talented, gorgeous, iconic, and could seriously rock a bold lip. Of course she could — she was a perfectly tan, super pretty, totally trendy celebrity, you're thinking. I can't do that! I thought the same thing, because quite frankly, I can't afford expensive products and I don't have the perfect teeth and naturally luscious lips that Selena had. But with the help of Miami-based makeup artist Natalie Zaldivar, I attempted to recreate a few of her most photographed lip looks, and you know what? They're completely doable. Read on to learn how to replicate three of her most iconic looks.

The first two steps are super simple but important. First, exfoliate your lips. This is good advice in general, but it's an especially good tip if you're using matte lipstick (which is super trendy right now) because it will get rid of any dry skin and ensure you have a smooth, even canvas to work with. Try this DIY vanilla-bourbon scrub

Next, apply lip balm or moisturizer to your lips. Zaldivar recommends dabbing off the excess; this will make applying your lipstick later on easier and prevent it from sliding around or sinking into the tiny cracks into your lips.

Step 1

Add liner. Now we're getting to the fun part. "The best way to line your lip is by using the side of the pencil, dragging it, then filling it," says Zaldivar. "If you apply on a tight smile, you get cleaner lines for your application." I used MAC's Lip Pencil in Chicory as a base for all three looks, but Zaldivar also recommends MAC's Lip Liner in Ruby Woo for its bright blue-red color.

Step 2

Now it's time to apply your color. For this look, I used Dose of Colors' Kiss of Fire liquid matte lipstick. Since liquid lipsticks can be a little messy, Zaldivar recommends starting from the middle of your lip and dabbing outward. Having your lip liner as a base makes it unnecessary for you to smother your lips with product, so just gently press them outward for even color. Also, liquid lipsticks have a drying time of around a minute, so once you've applied your color, try not to move it around too much while it's drying.

There you have it! You're finished.

The steps for this one are very similar to the ones above. If you haven't yet, now is a good time to exfoliate and moisturize your lips.

Fill in your lips with lip liner. I still used Chicory because it's versatile and works as a base for just about any color, but you can also try NYX Slim Lip Pencil in Fuchsia for a budget-friendly option, or Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil in Jilted.

Next, apply your color. I used a hot pink from Calvin Klein's CK One collection, but Zaldivar recommends Lime Crime's Velvetine Liquid Matte Lipstick in Pink Velvet if you're going for a matte finish. Smashbox Be Legendary Cream Lipstick in Inspiration will also do the trick if you're looking for a creamier lip. I also added Boots No. 7 Lip Shine and Tint in Ballet over the lipstick for some extra oomph.

Note that you'll need two lipstick colors for this one: one for your base and one for your top layer.

You know the drill: Fill in your lips all over with a deep brown lip liner, such as Rimmel London's Lasting Finish 1000 Kisses Stay On Lip Liner Pencil in Coffee Bean. However, Revlon ColorStay Lip Liner in Natural or Palladio Retractable Waterproof Lip Liner in Sand are two other good options. Next, I applied a layer of Make Up Forever's Rouge Artist Intense in Matte Flesh. You can also try Butter London's LIPPY Moisture Matte Lipstick or NYX Butter Lipstick in Vacation Spot for a similar brown color.

Step 2

Then add your second color. I went over the first layer with one of my all-time favorite colors, Burnt Red by Bobbi Brown, to achieve a warm glow. Catrice's Ultimate Color Lipstick in Read My Lips will provide a similar look. I added around the corner of my lips and pressed together to blend evenly, as Zaldivar recommended. (At this point, my lips were pretty sore from wiping over and over again, so maybe don't do what I did and try to go for all three looks at once.)
