10 Fashion myths Latinas need to stop believing

If I see one more Latina this week wearing a thick, waist-cinching belt around her fitted sweater dress, I'm going to flip out. Seriously, just because you have curves doesn't mean you have to belt everything and it definitely doesn't mean you have to ALWAYS wear hip-hugging clothes. What is with us and constantly showing off our shape? Okay, so we were blessed with some pretty gorgeous cuerpos. But less is always more, girl!

I'm sorry, but when it comes to fashion, some rules just need to be broken. A lot of Latinas (especially curvy ones) have this misconception that they should ONLY dress for their body. Don't get me wrong, you want to look for clothes that are going to flatter your figure. But not everything you wear has to look sexy. Sometimes a girl just wants to look stylish and sophisticated. What am I saying? Correction: A girl almost always wants to look stylish and sophisticated–not just sometimes! So maybe it's time we put away some of the bodycons, give the corset belts a rest and not make over-the-knee boots our casual date shoe staple. Great style is about keeping it simple. Here are 10 fashion myths every Latina needs to stop believing!

Stop belting EVERYTHING: You don't always need a belt to accentuate your waist. An A-line skirt that flares out or a mid-length blazer do a pretty good job at that.

Stop avoiding stripes: Whoever said stripes makes you look fatter had no clue what they were talking about. Stripes can be super flattering. Just look for a piece with smart strategic stripping that enhances your shape.

Stop avoiding prints: I don't understand why so many curvy chicks are afraid of prints. A good print looks good on anyone--flaca or not!

__Stop using pocket-less jeans to show off your as__s: Your ass might look great but you look super trashy. If you're over the age of 15 you can afford to get yourself some serious denim with pockets in the back–just saying!

Stop only wearing bodycon dress: Why do so many Latinas only own bodycon dresses? Seriously, A-line, shift and wrap dresses look good on all shapes and sizes–especially women with curves!

Please wear double denim: It's okay, you can do this without looking straight out of the 90s.

You can show some skin on top or bottom: It's not always about how much skin you're showing, it's about how sophisticated you look in that outfit. I've worn short dresses that have shown back and been told I look elegant. It's all about how you wear it and how you behave in that dress that determines if it's "sexy" or trashy."

Stop abusing crop tops: It's okay if you want to rock a crop top every now and again, but please don't make it your go-to piece. And definitely choose wisely where you decide to wear it. I don't care how in style it is, it will never be appropriate for work, a wedding or any other formal/professional setting.

We DON'T need to wear bright, loud colors all the time: Color is great, but there's nothing wrong with rocking neutrals. In fact, my go-to colors for fall/winter are typically black, white, gray and navy. You won't see me rocking naranja or coral until the spring time–and you sure as hell will never catch me in red!

Corset top: Can we give these things a rest please? A faja goes underneath your clothes. It's not meant to be worn as part of your outfit.
