#Dyedpits: Women are growing out & dyeing their armpit hair!

Simply growing out your armpit hair is soooooo 2000-late! Pffft! Nowadays, mujeres are taking the hair trend to a whole new level, going so far as to actually dye their pits. And I'm not talking about covering up underarm canas with a little Nice 'n Easy. No, girl. Chicas all over the country have taken to dyeing their pit hair all kinds of insane colors ranging from highlighter yellow to electric blue, and even booger green. And pa' qué? Well, to feel beautiful and empowered, of course.

As a hairy chica myself, I can see why women would be drawn towards this trend. First of all, it encourages creative expression; that's clear. But outside of that, the #dyedpits revolution encourages women to embrace their cuerpos, body hair and all. "This concept that we should shame body hair, that it's something that affects our beauty or value in any way, is one that we all need to unlearn," explains Latina blogger Destiny M. "This summer I decided to stop shaving my armpits. I stopped because for me, having body hair is empowering, it's a statement, it is desensitizing people in my life, and it's a giant 'F*** you' towards society and its stigmas." And about two months ago, Destiny took things even further. Inspired by a pic of a girl with bright pink pubic hair, she decided to dye her long, luscious underarm hair blue.

__As one does these days, Destiny shared her new look on social media. Not surprisingly, she received her fair share of backlash and criticism. But she also received a ton of support. "I scrolled through Twitter tags and found so many posts about me! And these blue armpits!" she writes. "Facebook groups talking about them! My aunt had me pose for her Instagram! Girls letting me know they are going to give it a go." And oh, boy have they given the look a whirl. Dozens of women on Instagram and Twitter have been sharing pics of their dyed pits using the hashtag, well, #dyedpits–duh! There are even several YouTube tutorials out there instructing interested chicas on how best to dye their pelitos. It's a sight to see!

Personally, I think this trend is beautiful. I'm all for women embracing their bodies and experimenting with their look. That said, I don't think dyed pits are for me, though I totally respect Destiny's stance and I give her major props for going ahead and practicing what she preaches. Yo no sé, pero I just can't get down with walking around looking like I have Marge Simpson in a headlock. That wouldn't make me feel beautiful at all. On the contrary, it would make me feel physically uncomfortable. I'm sorry, but stuffing an armpit full of hair into a hot sweater sounds like my idea of pure and utter hell. But hey, that's just me.

I'm a firm believer in the idea that one should do what's best for them. If growing out and dying your underarm makes you feel beautiful, then do you, boo boo. All that matters is that you're happy.
